What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
Today I was talking with some coworkers about careers and stuff and said I would like to be a virologist. I said it kind of offhandedly but my interest in viruses is quite clear.
My coworker remarked, "You can do it! You should go for it!" I thanked her for her words of encouragement but then said, no not really. And then she began to insist I can, which was cool but then she kept insisting I could and I told her no, I can't, it's not that easy and plus I was somewhat joking.
I don't know if I can describe this without sounding pessimistic, but I think it's possible to miss the boat on some of your life dreams and need to realize that ship has sailed and move on. I know a few people that are in their mid-30s and still completely devoting themselves to trying to break into the music business as a rapper.
