When I first heard the song, I thought it sounded a bit to obviously theme-songy to be played on the radio, what with the title of the film being right in there and all. I thought it was a good theme song, but not a very good song just to listen to. It's growing on me a bit, though.

Yeah, I think it grew to "acceptable" for me once I got past the initial hearing. It's definitely stamped in the Bond mold, it was just a little too obviously so for me. I've felt like some of the other themes took the motifs and did them more originally.

I think "Live or Let Die" is probably the most original song of the bunch that carries the motif successfully, and it probably is selected in the top 2-3 bond songs of all time whenever there is a ranking. "Die Another Day" was very original, but didn't seem to really express the brand to me.

Why didn't they make "Another Way to Die" the TITLE of a Bond MOVIE?

But the Jack White one was even worse than "Die Another Day" by Madonna.

Well, anything by Jack White is ear-stabbing crap anyway.

I just listened to this and I really like it. I enjoy the contrast between Jack White's gritty style and Alicia Keys' sultry voice. (Then again, I adore Jack White and he can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes. )

Honestly. I mean, "quantum of Solace" seems still to be such a vacuous name -- not sure what it even means. Another Way to Die definitely sounds like a Bond movie.

That's another song that I ended up really liking (by Garbage? Is that right?), that I hadn't expected to.

Getting back into older songs that diverged from the Bond motif, I did like Nobody Does It Better but hated All-Time High.

I think it's confirmed that he does drink martini, and this time he might give a damn whether it's shaken or stirred. And he does have the "Bond, James Bond" line, too. It was in one of the trailers.

Nice! Daniel Craig is still blonde, though.

I'm not really bothered by the martini scenes, I'm more bothered by the idea of putting the gun barrel sequence at the end of the movie instead of the beginning. It really makes no sense. The gun barrel is an iconic moment that draws you into the world of James Bond. It changes the feel from an average spy movie to a James Bond movie immediately. It was designed as an opener, but having it as a closer is just a silly artsy change that really has no purpose.

I understood the gun barrel placement in Casino Royale, and I thought it worked really well, but it's time to put it where it belongs again.

Indeed. And at least Quantum of Solace wasn't the title for a real Bond movie. Quantum would be even less of a Bond movie than Never Say Never Again if it weren't for Albert Broccoli's (and his offspring) name in the credits.

Tim Burton directing a Bond movie, with Johnny Depp as the villain, Jeffrey Jones as the main henchman, and Helena Bonham Carter as a Bond girl, probably the bad one, because Tim Burton has a habit of casting his wife as an evil bitch. Imagine Danny Elfman's rendition of Monty Norman's Bond theme. And not to mention a title sequence with a massive amount of spinning spirals. Dammit, Tim Burton would also love the gun barrel sequence. He would love it so much that he'd put it at the beginning of the film. It's like a spiral. Spiral. Spiral. Spiral.

I really like it. I'm sentimental about NY in the 20's, and it reminds me of that. Also I like themes of survival and strength in difficult dark times, and it reminds me of that too. I haven't actually seen any James Bond movies though. Maybe I'd like them.

Well, I generally love when directors step out of their genre comfort zone, like Martin Scorsese did with Hugo, to name one. It's always fascinating when a director plays with an entirely different genre, and yet his personal style still seeps through in subtle ways.

Maybe casting the Burton regulars like Depp and Carter would be overkill, but it would be an interesting experiment. In retrospect, however, Burton is not the best at directing action sequences -- I found the action sequences of his Batman films to be the most tedious parts -- he is, however, excellent at creating colorful characters. And Bond movies cannot function (not even with Daniel Craig) without a colorful villain.
