I've said this before, but:I’ve been watching some New Voyages episodes (fan series). It’s actually pretty darn good. Refreshing to see story emphasized over flashy special effects shots. For that matter, considering they’re independently produced fan films with limited budgets, the CGI shots of the Enterprise are pretty good. The acting varies from cringe to pretty good. One thing I like is that most of the actors aren’t just trying to do caricatures of the TOS cast, more than I can say for what we got with some of those Abramsverse performances. Nice to see something more than generic plots about mega villains wanting to destroy the federation because reasons.
It’s a shame paramount had to bring the hammer down on fan productions that weren’t really profiting to begin with.
What’s great about 4 is it proves that not everything has to be about a big bad villain conflict. I love it. It helped spur an interest in cetaceans when I first saw it as a kid.I've said this before, but:
I'd like something similar to Star Trek IV; something tackling an environmental theme. I'm not saying I want more whales, but Hollywood would probably interpret it as more whales.
Full disclosure: Star Trek IV is my favorite Star Trek movie.
There's so much that is just pure gold in that movie. The totally cosmic horror of the whale probe and the fact that we get no actual explanation for it because everyone is just so fucking thrilled that they managed to give it what it wanted and so it went away. Not only that, but we get that jaunty time travel experience that Marvel tried and failed to pull off with the same heart as James Dohan speaking into a mouse like its a cb radio(Im convinced Scotty is a HAM radio enthusiast because of the ease of which he held the mouse, clicked the button and said "Hello computer." And Bones is just there like "Thumbs up buddy."What’s great about 4 is it proves that not everything has to be about a big bad villain conflict. I love it. It's my favorite one. I saw it in the theater. It's a fun vacation movie. You get some solid friend action from Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, Spock's emotionally sensetive big brother shows up, embarresses Spock in front of his friends, helps Doctor McCoy deal with some deep seeded trauma and finding some peace from a burden he carried for so long. You see an old klingon diplomat seeking meaning in something beyond the typical death in battle, a Romulan who plays well with others, and David Warner. I liked the questions of belief and conviction that were raised, I liked that all the aliens there had things, important things, in common. It was a pilgrimage story about searching for meaning, and finding a sense of self respect and self awareness along the way, you get to see how each of the characters reacts to an intense moment of trial that reveals who they are, and how far they're willing to go for their convictions; and those have always held appeal to me.Star Trek V?
Out of all the ST films?
The one that opens and closes with "Row, Row, Row Your Boat"?
Seriously?
I almost walked out of that one.
I think 2 is much more popular but it was overused as the template for too many other films. What’s great about 4 is it proves that not everything has to be about a big bad villain conflict. I love it. It helped spur an interest in cetaceans when I first saw it as a kid.

I remember that, when cigarette ads were everywhere.
Crazy, isn't it? How everything used to smell like smoke, all cars had ashtrays in them, and when you'd go to a restaurant the air would always be hazy with cigarette smoke?I
