I'm thinking about checking out Picard Season 3 tonight. I'm deciding between that and trying to finish out the Mandalorian. I'll probably go with Picard which has gotten better marks, but I expect I'll be a lot more forgiving when I get around to the Mandalorian. I do kind of wish they'd kept things smaller in scope and not tying it into bringing back Thrawn or whatever it is, but that was probably never going to happen.
There can be no Expanded Universe without everyone's favorite Chiss Grand Admiral.

I was partial to Sonia Gomez. The beverage-spilling (chocolate milk???) incident only made her more endearing. Kinda bummed when I learned I'd seen the last of her. Actually Allison Pill gave me similar vibes in Picard at first and then they had to go and make things grimdark, ugh.

Pike Really is the best of Starfleet. I dont know that I would have taken that crystal.
He’s the ideal every other captain read about in the history books and wished they were. He probably inspired more people to go to the Academy than Kirk and Picard combined. Though I bet Sisko or Janeway would be pretty popular in the late 24th century and might be close seconds as most legendary Captains. Archer would probably be up there too. Archer is Washington, but Pike is Lincoln. Sisko is JFK and Janeway is Jimmy Carter combined with Obama lol.

The whole Locutus thing probably hurt Picard’s reputation quite a bit and he doesn’t seem to be as big a deal in universe as he is to fans in real life. Kirk’s also got some questionable actions that probably make him controversial to many people in Starfleet although his missions and tactics are still required reading for every cadet.

Alison Pill's career generally has been far more nuanced than the one dimensional character she played in season 1 of Picard. (I first saw her in HBO's original run of In Treatment.) So I had the opposite response, it felt almost criminal to give her such an uncomplicated cheery role. Not that her season 2 role was written perfectly, it still had some issues, but at least for most of the season it had more depth.

You know I couldn't help but picture this when you said Archer, even though I know what you meant...

Didn't she murder a guy though? Or am I misrembering? Or did they reveal there was more to it than that at some point?

You might be misremembering. I don't think she kills anyone, or there's a period where the Borg Queen is controlling her where people are assimilated, until she is able to work out an agreement with the Queen to enter a new phase of existence for both of them.

There's three alternate universe guys who die because they are threatening picard in episode 2, but I don't recall who shoots them.

President of the federation thinks compromise projects weakness...I wonder how she's going to learn that the real strength of the federation comes from the ability of all its members to compromise....silly president.

Oh Deep Space in your entirety, I just always keep coming back to you. You make me feel the most seen in characters, and that's a pretty tough thing to do since Star Trek characters are designed to be connected to by the audience. But Deep Space Nine...You nailed it.

Also way back in season one....Rom was the most developed character arc, because they really seemed to believe he was utterly incapable of not swallowing his own tongue in season 1 upto and including Odo catching Quark using senior offoicer replicators because he told him ROm fixed his. Which either means Odo the keen observer of solids, missed something that was happening on the regular(Rom being a good mechanic who basically kept Quarks running through the Occupation and beyond) OR Rom was just that good of a false idiot. Like more so than Edward Norton, no wonder he became the Negus, and married Leeta... Zek saw him for everything that the ferengi could be...I have to believe Garak knew because one practiced deciever recognizes another, but as written (and not accounting for just writers developing a character based on the actors portrayal) Rom is more devious than the Obsidian Order, the Tal Shiar, The Dominion, and Section 31 combined.

I can see why Wesley Crusher was so hated. I'm making my way for the first season, and he's almost always right about everything, and everything else is wrong. I think the character would have been received better if they'd had him make mistakes and occasionally be wrong because of inexperience, while still having moments where his underestimated because of his age. From what I've read, it sounds like they "fix" the character in later seasons. Would that be accurate?
Michael Burnham of ST Discovery is the new Crusher. It's as if the writers are trying to send a message to the fans that they don't learn, so stop complaining. It's the most hated series (Discovery) by fan reviews. However, the ratings are magically kept high. What I love about ST is it's always a team effort show. Rarely one person is always right. I think the writers wanted to create a strong female character who is always right to make the feminists happy.

Are you enjoying TNG? Asking cuz it's so old.

Man it's one of my favourite shows. ST - especially TNG - is my feel good show. When I watch it I want to be a part of it. I can imagine myself in it.

Me too. Its clear the writers did too, but season 1 he was not developed.
hi arc reminds me of damar's. each grew from cartoonishly one-dimensional sidekick henchmen into well-rounded heroes with a lot of heart. Damar may be my favorite DS9 character.

my absolute favorite dukat/damar scene:

dukat was a piece of shit but he still loved his old protege. you can tell here he genuinely cares about Damar and still sees so much potential in him. A rare moment where Dukat was genuine and not simply fluffling someone's ego to further his own interests. Dukat knows too well how devious Weyoun can be and is probably sad to see his old friend turned into his puppet.
