I think the production design of newer Trek leaves a lot to be desired. Actually most of the design and look of the universe from Enterprise on I find bland and derivative of most contemporary space science fiction design.
Lower Decks is probably the best of the lot, and that's because they actually took the TNG-DS9-VOY aesthetic (which was very unique among science fiction franchises of that period) but redesigned it to fit the later point in the timeline. Picard, for all the money and work they put into it, just looks uninspired and drab. The only bits of design that ever stand out to me are the repurposings (i.e. the old Romulan TOS style Bird of Prey) or call backs (i.e. images of Picard's old ships The Stargazer and Enterprise D). The new starfleet ships in Picard are so lacking and boring--they look like someone just looked at a bunch of Star Trek Online ship classes and then were inspired to make the most basic, generic type of ship ever--all the more amusing when Riker boasts he is on the most advanced ship in the fleet, when it's the same type of ship as every other bloody ship in his fleet. One of the fun things about past trek was the diversity of types of starfleet vessels, but in Picard, despite their high budget, they just made one or two types of ships. The JJverse is still my least favorite of any phase of trek when it comes to production design and aesthetics. I did like the redesign of the TOS uniforms--they took a classic design and just slightly tweaked it. Certain classic designs (i.e. Volkswagen beetles, the classic iPod) really don't need to be changed much, just slightly rehauled. If only they had taken a similar approach to the Enterprise. The JJprise is all distorted and fucked up. The nacelles are too bulbous and close together, and they look "top heavy" attached to that saucer. Sure, it's zero gravity, but there's somethign to be said for the appearance of balance in a good spaceship design. Discovery, in the other hand, handles their design of the TOS ship a little better. they got the proprotions more accurate. It both looks like the classic TOS design while being an obvious update.
Doscovery actually introduced several interesting classes of ships. I like them in theory, but they feel too advanced and to me look like they would be a better fit for the TNG/Picard era. The blue Discovery uniforms I also kinda like, as they distinctly starfleet but also original--they look like a natrual transition point between the jumpsuits of Enterprise and the bright primary color uniforms of TOS.
