These are the people who are supposed to protect us?

I understand not wanting to shutdown the government, but you finished saying it was a horrible CR and "hell no."

Despite the chaos, these are the polling numbers:

Unfortunately, this level of disapproval is something Trump can live with. He did it his whole first term. If Musk becomes too much of a problem, Trump can dump Musk for a bump. I'm pretty sure that's been the plan all along. We saw plenty of that last time.

I've asked my Trump voting family and friends if anything they've seen made them regret their vote. They are not surprised by the chaos. They still maintain the alternative is worse. I have some inkling of what they mean by that comment.

Democrats need to somehow win. They're supposed to be the big tent, not the group that pisses of all their coalition.

The Democrats, or rather the progressive, inclusive perspective, will win in the end. It always does. As Martin Luther King said, the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. All the oligarchs and bigots can do is try to hold back progress. They cannot stop it. What we are seeing is the violent death throes of ways of doing business that need to die. Unfortunately many people will suffer in the interim as a result.

I hope you are right, and this happens fast enough.

We have major trust issues with both the intellectual and political leadership of the supposed opposition party.

If AOC primaries Schumer in the Senate, this will still take a long time.

Europe is going full 1790s America

The moment when EU is even officially starting to turn into United States of Europe.
As I was saying, the paradigms are shifting on large scale and that means that trans-atlantic relations can't remain what they were over the last 80 years. In about 3/4 of the things EU is already large federal country and now things are going towards 4/4. What in the end means that this is the start of new era in wider North Atlantic area.

Just saying.

It will take a long time. It took Germany 12 years to get rid of their fascists, and they were helped by the allied powers fighting back. There is plenty of grassroots opposition here, but it needs effective leadership to become galvanized into something effective. Good leaders like Bernie Sanders, Tim Walz and Pete Buttigieg are travelling the country encouraging progressives and reaching out to the skeptical. We shall see what comes of the efforts of folks like that.

I don't think we're as far as Nazi Germany in our palingenetic ultranationalism, so hopefully it'll take less time to recover.

The palingenesis isn't as strong yet, though that may change. The ultranationalism is clear. But the lack of effectiveness, I think, will make it collapse.

Continuation of the story:

EU slams the door on US in colossal defense plan

EU risks more Trump tariffs in looming Big Tech crackdown

I am sorry, but the picture of the world some people here tried to defend a few days ago is pretty quickly turning to be unrealistic one.
While most of European media and politics are openly saying that on continental scale Europe is entering the largest socio-political shift since 1945.

I was going to add that it took the USSR generations to get rid of the Communist dictatorship, but they have simply replaced it with another. They had no history of democracy, though, and have simply moved from one form of authoritarianism to another. The US at least does have a strong tradition of democracy, which gives us much to draw on when we finally have the opportunity to recover from our own descent into fascism. We just need to tap into that Minuteman mentality, when every farmer with a musket was ready to put everything on the line for our freedom. As the saying goes, freedom isn't free. Time to pay up.
