DOWN goes Bolsonaro.

Sad that celebration will turn to caution, given that Jair is almost >90% likely to deny and fight the results. Hopefully, Brazil doesn't have its own J6 or worse.
Key allies of Bolsonaro have already accepted the result. Looks like Brazilian proto-fascists have more decency (or common sense) than American proto-fascists.

Remember the 9 Euro ticket that bought you short and mid distance public transport (meaning you can you simply have to change trains more often if you want to travel long distances) all over Germany and which was available for June, July and August as a special relief programm to help people with high gasoline prices?

Well, there was enough of a public demand for a longterm nationwide public transport flatrate that the government has now announced exactly that: starting in january there will be a sort of subscription ticket for 49 euros covering short and mid distance public transport all over Germany. You can cancel it anytime and this is meant as a longterm project, not a shortterm relief and should be around for years to come.

There already was such a thing as a flatrate ticket but meant for high-income business travellers - it includes long distance express trains and costs 4144 euros per year! If you buy the new ticket for each month of the year thats 588 euros per year...

An affordable nationwide public transport flatrate, finally!:frolic:

They also won in the legislative election (denying Luiz Inácio da Silva sufficient support to carry out any kind of extreme left-wing program), and it is this that might have something to do with the fact that Bolsonaro's supporters might not be too eager entirely to delegitimize the election results, even if Jair Bolsonaro did lose this election.

Treason Chic: How two activist journalists became the new faces of left-wing anti-Americanism. James Kirchick (2013).
The officers seized Miranda’s cellphone, camera, laptop, encrypted memory sticks, and external hard drive...Miranda is the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald, who, since June, has broken a series of stories about programs conducted by the National Security Agency and other Western intelligence services, all based upon leaks from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. One such program, Prism, enables the NSA to gather data from Internet companies; Greenwald also revealed the existence of a top-secret court order that gave the agency access to telephone record logs, or “metadata,” from Verizon. Greenwald and others portrayed these legal programs in Orwellian terms, writing cryptically of sinister “mass surveillance,” as if every human being’s phone calls and emails were being overheard and read by analysts.

Miranda had been traveling from Berlin—where he had met with Laura Poitras, an American documentary filmmaker collaborating with Greenwald and Snowden—to Rio de Janeiro, where he lives with Greenwald. Even as the detention was ongoing, Greenwald was furiously depicting it as the workings of an authoritarian state bent on silencing its critics. “This was obviously designed to send a message of intimidation to those of us working journalistically on reporting on the NSA and its British counterpart,” he fumed in a blog post published the following day. Greenwald then went on to compare the British government’s “simply despotic” behavior unfavorably to the Mob, writing that “even the Mafia had ethical rules against targeting the family members of people they felt threatened by. But the UK puppets and their owners in the U.S. national-security state obviously are unconstrained by even those minimal scruples.”
Of course, "Treason Chic" is a reference to Tom Wolfe's (in)famous New York Magazine's article Radical Chic: That Party at Lenny's (Bernstein's) about the intersection of frivolity and radical extremist politics that, I am sad to admit, remains relevant to this very day - as well as to a Russian brand of accessories made of silk, wool, and cashmere (I kid you not).

The German foreign ministry is now on Mastodon. The German ombudsman for data protection and freedom of information even closed his official Twitter acount and is now exclusively on Mastodon. Several ministries as "closely observing" the situation regarding Twitter as breaches of data security or the spreading of disinformation are a real threat to national security.

For one brief and glorious second...I imagined something truly magical that the world needs in more ways than one...

i wonder if these dipshits in white nationalist punk rock bands are bothered by the fact that most of their instruments were derived from instruments invented by brown tribespeople

I saw that. I assume it was by accident, but... Holy Shit!

Are they that bad at hitting their intended target?

They aim at the targets quite near Polish border and it is possible that they simply missed. Or someone got too drunk and made a mistake. In a way it was a matter of time when this mistake will happen.

However I presume nothing too big will happen if this doesn't happen again. This just isn't worth of starting WW3 (for all sides).

I don't have the time to be regular here any more. But I suppose that I should share my midterm thoughts, now when the dust settled for the most part.

As I claimed from the beginning the Republicans made a huge mistake with Roe, because that is simply too radical move. Especially since the ban should be pushed without much exception in all of the states that are under red control. While on the other hand many Republican candidates were pretty bad even if you judge them by Republican standards. Plus what most media have kind forgotten: "Biden is basically a wartime president". What clearly helps the incumbent party in the elections. Therefore overall Republicans can kinda be happy that the result isn't even worse for them. Because there was evidently room for that. Plus if Roe goes back to the states that means that the topic will stay there in future elections and that will tilt the maps towards blue. Therefore overall this was almost surely very none strategic move on Republican side. Especially since they already have problems with winning popular vote and we are in times when Boomers will start to fade in numbers. Since the oldest ones are approaching 80 and older generations will completely disappear. What already tilts things towards Blue in combinations with other demographic and cultural changes. Therefore opening one more front in draining your vote probably wasn't that smart. This should have been a red year and it ended as a toss up year because of all these factors. So when really blue years comes it will probably be hard to climb back into balance without changing the platform of the party.

However what is most interesting here is that this seems to be the end of Trump Era in it's current form. The party is rebelling against him and that will be hard to stop. Especially since now there is evidently a clear alternative in Florida governor. From what I saw the party even organized the inside polls about primaries for 2024. Towards which Trump will lose the nomination pretty clearly if the polls are even remotely correct. The numbers are in the polling results on 538. Therefore if this is indeed the end of Trump as dominant figure on the right this is pretty big deal. Since that changes a lot in the US and eventually in the world as well. In other words the whole western world will probably become more politically compact.

I have a feeling the next president is going to be Pence. It's not my choice - I think his policies are too severe and it will be bad news personally. It's mostly a gut feeling, but he is also poised for it having been connected to Trump, but now at odds. He is also speaking in calm measured tones and saying words like "compassion", "freedom".

I'm not sure if Biden will run again or how people will feel. Maybe there is a compelling Democrat to run. Interestingly people have been wanting George Clooney to run, and he is married to an amazing woman, Amal, who is an Oxford trained human rights lawyer who has been involved in international prosecution of war crimes and peace negotiations. She just gave birth to their babies, but I could see him running in 6 or 10 years from now. IDK. He'd have the social charisma to win.

I'm not promoting Pence with my statements, but preparing myself mentally. At least he seems to support civilization and democratic process, but I think he is a bit severe, absolutist, narrow in his social morality. Trump has set the bar so low that it doesn't take much to be a better option.
I thought for awhile that Pence would run with Liz Cheney as VP. I don't really think that anymore - certainly not after his latest remarks. He is a conservative with the most backward views, I don't even think Republicans want to deal with that. He also hasn't won an election since 2013.

The last person I would like to be president is any celebrity or the vast majority of billionaires (Pritzker would be my single exception). A lawmaker like Katie Porter or someone like her would be ideal.

What were Pence's latest remarks? The comments I heard have little content, but used many comforting words in a calm voice, which I think some people will like. I read over the wikipedia listing of his policies and see the problems.

I mentioned a celebrity because that has a history of winning elections. It's not a matter of my personal choice, but social observations. Clooney's wife is actually the one that sounds potentially qualified, but socially she would be unlikely to get it because she is a woman and middle eastern and not heavily present in social view. When I see him as a possibility, I also assume he would rely on her input, but that could be a leap. As an actor, he would not have the training for the position, but he may have genuine motivations for human rights, and people would respond to his charm.

People have been saying for decades they want a president with whom they can picture themselves sharing a beer. Seems absurd to me, but I think it's because it makes the world feel small and comforting and like they have control, presence, and input when they don't.

I want a president that is actually interested in governing and has experience at at least one level of it. That's why I would pick someone like Katie Porter. Not because she is a woman either - I think she has the right qualifications, experience and she understands what normal people are talking about. Example; She's a single mom with three kids - she grocery shops the same way all parents do. That makes her relatable but I don't care about having a beer with her. I think that mythology died with Obama, good riddance. I just don't think a celebrity has the same sway as it may have had in the past. Social media took care of that.

The number one job of a politician is to serve the people they govern. All of them. As the head of state and the head of government, it's what people should demand of the president especially.
