In Gotham, do you think Alfred Pennyworth is "over powered"?

I have heard fans of the Warhammer 40K universe talk about characters or factions being "over powered", as a result of changes in rules of play they are "too powerful".

My question is do you think that Alfred Pennyworth as he appears in Gotham is "too powerful" compared to his usual characterisation or classic characterisation in the comic books?

In Gotham he is an ex-SAS special forces type, I also think he's much younger and fitter than the characters in the comics, in his attitude towards "training" of the young Bruce Wayne it seems that he has a view of "training" and combat skills that they are perishable skills and presumably he would have kept his own sharp as a consequence.

Though, in the second season he goes out looking for Bruce and winds up fighting with this uber assassin character, I was glad of it in some ways because that character appeared virtually invincible and was a little arrogant I thought, also Alfred did not come away unscathed, but he came as close to kicking their ass as anyone so far in the show.

So I wonder if the character is not a little too "over powered" now.

I think they portrayed him mainly as such to cover for young Bruce Waynes obvious weaknesses, being a kid. In order not to have Bruce end up as a side character in his own story yet still staying true to typical Batman's BANGS and KAPOWS. By having Alfred, who is the closest character to Bruce, take on some of that stuff..

So for Gotham I say it works well. But I do agree I didn't really take it in easily as my idea of his character was a far gentler and pacifistic like character. Which in Gotham he clearly is not.

Still, its clear in the series as well that while he is capable, he really doesn't like violence and that side of himself, so one can imagine his younger self end up becoming the older Alfred we all know and love.

I enjoy the Gotham Portrayal of him the best thus far, a warrior gentleman. as far as power dynamics, he's still a Butler first, so he stil by bond of word to Tomas, answers to Bruce.
