I don't understand....how do I start a conversation with a stranger?

I understand perfectly well what to do if I'm in a conversation. I know how to act around friends and girls that I like, that I ALREADY KNOW or people someone else has introduced me to.

But I don't understand how to start a conversation with a random stranger. I don't know what to say. I've been doing trial and error testing different things to do and say for a while and have come up dry.
