How do you find a job or a new career, especially when the economy is in such bad shape? You try. You try hard. And then you try harder. Try smart. Try smarter. Try courageously. Try fearlessly. Try persistently, and try consistently. Try innovatively, and try enthusiastically.
Action is the only thing you're missing. Has the economy ever hand-cuffed you to a chair? No! The economy is not holding you back. It's not even making things harder - you are!
You can find a new job in one week. Two, if you are busy. The most important action steps are the ones you are not taking! Try to find a job like everybody else and you'll struggle just like everybody else.
What's stopping you from applying to 5 temp agencies a day until you've hit them all in your area? What's stopping you from writing down the top 30 places you'd like to work for, ranking them, and then calling them one at a time regardless of whether not you think you're qualified or if they are currently hiring?
What's stopping you from sending your resume and cover letter to 100 people, even if they are not employers, or even if they are not hiring anybody?
What's stopping you from writing a song called "Please Employ Me" and then performing it wherever you think it could be helpful?
What's stopping you from thinking that anyone wouldn't absolutely love and completely benefit from employing you? What's stopping you from thinking that you deserve the best? What's stopping you from taking risks and showing extreme initiative?
Nothing is stopping you, that's what. It's just a choice.
Do whatever you can think of. It will be fun, and extremely effective. It won't even take that long. Nothing will happen until you do. You never know what might come about. When you're dedicated, percentages are dismissed because the goal becomes the only thing you focus on. Expose yourself to everything that has potential. If you're not willing to do that, then I truly hope that there are other things about your life that are meaningful enough for you to make up for what you're clearly missing.
Possibilities are unknown, and unlimited, but we can imagine:
5 temp agencies a day - Within a few days, you'll be getting a lot of calls. Reject as many as you want.
Your favorite 30 - You might find out the first one is hiring. Maybe the 5th one. Maybe all of them will reject you, but you would have just gained tons of phone experience and action breeds confidence. Still, it wouldn't take that long to do so you have nothing to lose.
Sending resume to 100 people - Maybe one is a great employer that hires you. Maybe one is a friend who says "I think you'd be perfect for ___ company" and you end up getting that job. Either way 100 is quite a number. Something will come of it. Even if it's not a job, there's 100 people that are now aware that you're looking.
Employ me song - The song is impressively funny and everybody loves it. One in the crowd tells you they are hiring where they work and that you'd be perfect. Or maybe a business owner himself sees how much courage and initiative you have and decides to give you a chance. Either way, you entertain people, have fun, and increase your chances.
Most people try to find a job like they throw a dart, and they are extremely cautious about throwing that dart. If you really want results, don't throw darts timidly, shoot missiles boldly. You have nothing to lose.

I haven't lived by the above advice, but I'd like to try. This is written mostly as an experimental challenge to myself.
