These are some cliches that have been sitting around in my mind for awhile, but that I've decided to write down after reading some movie cliche lists on the internet. Not all of these are related to entertainment, some are day to day life things that seem to repeat over and over.

School/college

Raoult's Law: In a mixture of benzene and toluene, the partial pressure of each component is equal to the mole fraction of that component multiplied by the vapor pressure of pure component. (wikipedia link to the actual law. the benzene/toluene example seem to be a favorite example used for this law, used far more commonly than other possible examples.)

Simplifications: Lower level science classes will tend to give a simplification without explaining that it is a simplification, and under what conditions it applies. (They don't do this all the time, but do seem to do it a lot).

Thermodynamics: The laws of thermodynamics are a set of relationships developed in the 18th century to explain the behavior of ideal gases. However, recent research suggests that other systems, such as solutions, will follow these laws relatively well under most measured conditions. (I can understand where this one comes from, a lot of the calculation are far easier with ideal gases, but the method does show up often enough to be included here.)

Lab class uncertainty: Scientists can make measurements to the atomic scale, can measure extremely small units of time, can accurately detect trace chemical down to extremely small concentrations, but in chemistry lab classes, measurements will as often as not be pretty far off.


fantasy

All powerful artifacts: The key to destroying the evil, powering the evil, etc. will involve some powerful device created long ago. For some reason, during this long period of time people will not have figured out how to produce similarly powerful items.

The power of social networking: Every important person is long time friends with and/or related to all the other powerful people. Few or no important people just kind of appears outside of this network.


Computer games

In fantasy themed RPG's, the following five classes will be suggested: bard, barbarian, berserker, martial arts monk, runemaster. It does not matter whether some other class already in the game does what one of the suggested classes would do.

Loot and experience: These just don't seem to go away.

Space colonization races: Will have humans, several odd alien name races.

Planetary geology 101:planets in space colonization games only have just one type of terrain on them.

The miracle of private enterprise: Spies, supplies, and trade will travel instantly among the different big civilizations, even if no contact has been made and player controlled ships with the most advanced propulsion technology take several turns/minutes to get where they are going.
