It is hard to understand the psyche of Americans.
It is hard because Americans are so attractive.
One of the reasons Americans are so attractive is that they have built the most successful propaganda system the world has ever seen. And it is called Hollywood.
We see every day on our screens beautiful Americans, twelve feet tall, in beautiful upmarket surroundings, in beautiful clothes, in glorious colour, playing to our deepest fantasies.
But face to face Americans are no less attractive.
And face to face Americans are trained from birth to work at being attractive. Americans instinctively sell themselves, selling themselves day by day is taken for granted. If you don't sell yourself, no one else will.
And the purpose of selling yourself is to build social capital.
And the extraordinary thing is that social capital works.
And I can tell you, looking at America with an anthropological eye is an extraordinary experience.
