what seems to happen in biotech is that everyone enters basically as a lab tech or apps specialist. Then as you define your skill set you migrate into new positions that make you happier.
So I started on the bench but enjoyed customer face time and helping them develop thier own assays so I moved into Training. Then I wanted to more forcefully drive development of products so I moved into Marketing. Some of my collegues never left the bench and others are moving into production, project management, QA, QC or product development positions depending upon what they like.
Perhaps you may get stuck in corporate America, however within that confine, identify areas which you can grow into and be happy in.
What is interesting in that BS level bench scientists are a pretty even mix of types. However where they go from there can become quite stratified by type.
As for money, it just seems to follow increasing responsibility. I like to change stuff, which means being responsible for stuff, which means more money. But it is always odd as that isn't why I go to work everyday.
