Hi peeps,
I've been lurking for a while and finally signed up as I am after some advice regarding my career. I have worked in IT support for the last 10 years, but I am not sure if it is for me anymore. I recently moved jobs to a more technical desk and am finding it very difficult. There is so much I don't know meaning I have to ask questions a lot. Also, there are small amounts of calls, and I find myself anxiously waiting for work when I just want to be given work to do, told how to do it and left to carry on. I don't mind fixing simple problems, but the more complex ones stress me out. I just want to know the answer and fix it.
Anyway, here a are a few of my work likes/dislikes:
Having instructions
Structure
Repetition
Like helping people (but dealing with customers constantly, drains me)
Prefer working alone
Enjoy being busy, very hard working when I know what I am doing
Very black/white, no complex theories
Jobs I have enjoyed:
Computer repair shop - No complex issues, only building new machines or replacing components. Any software problems we couldn't fix, just reinstall Windows. Great colleagues who were close friends. Not much pay was the only downside, otherwise I would of stayed here for life.
My previous 1st line support role for a multi national organisation - 100s of calls a day, no problem solving, fixes were simple and had instructions for, anything complex sent to specialist teams
3rd line support - got promoted from 1st line straight to 3rd, nothing to do with my technical skills though, more down to my hard working nature and working any hours asked for. didn't enjoy this, little structure, difficult calls
Most careers/personality tests recommended accounting but I have never really thought about it. I have just downloaded some accounting courses to test the waters. Can anyone recommend me a career that sounds suitable? I don't mind having to study, I just want to be happy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
