I don't know if the answers are revealed later in the thread, but I'll say:

1. ESTP, perhaps an ESFP. He reminds me of an ESTP I know that I mistyped for a while as ESFP.

2. INTJ. I think a schedule like the one described would hurt an INTP. I wouldn't rule him out being an ISTJ though.

3. I'm saying INTP just to be different. I sure everyone else will say ENTP, but I think there is room for him to be an unusually self-confidant INTP. In fact he probably is an ENTP, but if he does to turn out to be an INTP, I want to be the one guy who gets it right.

4. ESFJ. The end.

Most people guessed ESTP for #1 because the entire first paragraph was dedicated to Se and you didn't offer any intuitive descriptions to counter it.

Well you should have picked up that it was tertiary.

I can't talk, I almost said ESTJ for #1, but the Se threw me off.

Yep, I think intent matters a lot more.

Can there ever be a consistent method for typing? I guess the problem here is that none of the theories are all encompassing. So people pick and choose different aspect to best fit an individual.

As the system stands right now, I don't think there can be a consistent method. If the system were actually more of a checklist format, or..heh..more scientific..then there could be. But I guess the nature of the whole thing -- the subjectivity and self-assessment being a key part of its nature -- would prevent that from occurring.

When I type I actually take an aggregate of the dichotomy and cognitive functions... Actually, the objective isn't so much to type but to understand them. So I have no problems with using whatever I have on hand.

Yeah, I think I do the same. And in the end I just want to understand them anyway, and for me, in the real world, that means scrapping mbti all together because it often gets in the way of my understanding them and it's simply more intuitive for me to approach them as a human being and start there.

The issue with two people coming up with different type is interesting though. Just like when two different tests give you different answers, which one do you go with? Or neither? Or something in between? Or perhaps it doesn't matter at all?

I've often thought as well that for me personally, knowing my type doesn't yield any greater self-understanding. At all. Sure, having names to put towards cognitive functions can make discussions easier and more fluid, but it doesn't change anything or uncover things about myself that I didn't already know. I think typing is more for people who DO the typing. So if one person thinks I'm an INFJ, great! They'll approach me as if I'm an INFJ. If another thinks I'm actually an ISFP, they'll view me in that light. Whatever they think I am, it'll somehow comfort them as they'll feel they have a better grasp/understanding of who I am and how I tick. I do it too..we all do. It's just human nature, to make personal groupings of people. Alas, I'm rambling.

I talked about this recently with a friend who finds INFPs to be passive-aggressive, and we realized that it's probably a miscommunication thing. I don't think INFPs are actively passive-aggressive, but their non-directive style of communication sometimes makes them come across as such to strong Js. Like, some INFPs I've known will say, "Oh, we're out of paper." and not follow up on it, while a judging person expects to hear, "I'll get more paper," or at least "Could you pick up some paper?" So it might not be that their intention is to make someone else do what they want, but that's what comes across. I wonder if this applies to some extent to all types with strong Fi.

Most of the people I have met who strike me as actively passive-aggressive are FJs, but maybe that's just the sample of people I know. ISFJs seem to fall into that trap especially easily. Again, probably to some extent a communication issue.

That's a good point. A form of projection. Interpreting what someone says in the same manner and as having the same intent that it would have if *I* was the one who said or did it.

Well, it's very Se, but unhealthy Se, which is why I eliminated ESTP and went for ENTP. ENTJ didn't even cross my mind.

I was simply explaining why ESTP stood out. Actually, I found the description reasonable enough. If I knew any ENTJs in real life, I might have figured it out.

He has a very commanding personality. Without me even knowing it, he consistently manages to put himself in a position of authority over me in any activity or conversation. It doesn't really matter if I try and fight him off, he just keeps talking down to you until you accept it.

Seen the results now and think I did reasonably well. Got one absolutely right, and was only one letter out on the other three. Here's my postmortem.

Person 1 (eNTJ) - I'm amazed that hardly anyone got this right. This just screamed out ExTJ to me, and very very likely ENTJ. Most of the guesses were ESTP, but I barely even considered that, didn't get that vibe at all. Little secret about men who aren't ESTPs: although some might not like to admit it, most at some point in their lives secretly wished that they were ESTP. Men acting like dicks in a showy, ostensibly ESTP way usually aren't ESTPs. I've only known a few ESTPs, so my sample size isn't very large, but they weren't dicks.

Person 2 (INTJ) - Fair enough. I know the schedule thing would appear a bit of a giveaway, but I just figured INTPs can have OCD too, and that the overall vibe was just more INTP.

Person 3 (ENtP) - Well, given that it's a small t, I was pretty close here. I went with f because ENTPs are all arseholes who don't feel a shred of remorse when they've wronged someone Also ENFPs are perfectly capable of being into computer programming and such. And although some people seem to think that the insensitivity part doesn't fit with ENFP, I think that on the contrary ENFPs are more likely to invoke insensitivity in the name of being funny (I used to work with a really great INFJ guy who just couldn't reconcile my gentle eloquence and learning on a wide range of subjects with the torrent of abusive filth that would gush from my mouth just minutes later. I used to love how it drove him mad). So overall I got an ENFP vibe off the guy: ENFPs tend to be both the nicest guys and the biggest arseholes, whereas ENTPs are just the biggest arseholes.

Person 4 (ESFJ) - Okay, even though almost everyone on this thread got this right, and the few that didn't opted for ESFP, I'm going to stick to my guns and say she's a mistyped ISFJ. I think part of the problem here is the automatic perception that talkative outgoing types are E's and that shy quiet types are I's. Of course, in most cases this is true, but not always because what really matters with this Jung lark is the use of functions. For me the stand out point here is that this is someone who obviously uses Fe a lot, but isn't actually very good with it, suggesting it's not her dominant function. Also, bear in mind that the original poster has admitted to not liking her very much, and this probably means he's not great at seeing the positive ISFJ traits that she may have (they're probably well hidden anyway if she has tested as ESFJ). Some of her negative characteristics remind me a little bit of my ISFJ mum's worst aspects (I should point out that my mum is a wonderful person). And despite being an introvert, my mum talks A LOT. Incessantly. I kind of wonder how she manages to breath sometimes. It can drive me insane -- and I often talk a lot too!

My guesses would have been:

As for the first one, my main reason would have been quite shady... Your description made me think of Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. I believe he's an ENTJ with hyperactive Se, who acts like a ladies' man primarily to satiate his mastermind tendencies, and in discussion his TJness becomes pretty obvious. Also, the ESTP guys I know are usually extremely friendly, fun-loving creatures (Fe) who typically don't try to show others who's the boss. I considered ESFP as well but I've seen ENTJs 'masking' as both ESFPs and ESTPs to be more successful in society, so ENTJ seemed like a better guess.

As for the second one, to be honest I really don't think that routine and strict schedule equals J. I think that hyperactive Tertiary Si can provide for it just as well. I've actually met more INxPs who were pretty in love with their quirky little routines than INxJs. Do you think that your friend's schedule actually has any point (it is practical), or does it just seem like a quirk? Besides that, the sense of humor you described sounds totally Ne to me. "For example, he will give you step A and B of the joke, and it's up to you to infer steps C, D and E by yourself based on the situation." - where is this Ni? Playing with associations is much more typical for Ne. Plus, "finding logic to justify everything" is much more Ti than Ni+Te. Are you really sure that your friend is an INTJ?

As for the third one, I thought ENTP was pretty obvious, as the description sounded exactly as my two ENTP friends.

As for the last one, it sounded exactly like the ESFJ 'stereotype', but I've also met a fair share of ENFPs who were all 'nice to your face' but talked about you behind your back the next minute. Some ENFJs I know do it just as skillfully. Also, the passive-agressiveness doesn't sound too Fe-Si imo. (The ESFJs I know are rather plain aggressive ) But the desire to control her boyfriend does sound J, and you didn't offer enough N qualities for her to come across as an N.

Yeah, you didn't describe #1 very well. You went on and on and on about Se and never mentioned anything about Ni, or even Te.
