Does 'gaming' only refer to games that are played computer games or video games? Ok, I'm old and have no clue!

Personally, I dislike all computer games, video games, even most board games! I'll make an exception for DDR, and I admit I'm learning Guitar Hero (but I suck). I don't like these things because either they are too impersonal, time wasters, or just plain boring and slow (in the case of many board games).

I do however like gambling in casinos. It's more lively, social and fast-paced.

Though I should give a +100 to the whole "board games are slow are boring". I personally believe that this is why they are called board games and that someone just couldn't spell. The whole excuse of "it's played on a board" just doesn't fly with me.

Why? Did that sound like an INTJ? If so... maybe a day, but I don't think I would like having to live that way for long...

The whole doing things yourself because you're not sure others are capable. That's quite controlling. I just wondered if you fancied the whole NT blessing of not really picking up that other's may be upset by being pushed around so you could go all out.

Well, yeah, I guess that's what I was thinking about when I wrote it... I had been in three groups where no one even tried to do any work besides myself, even though I kept asking for their opinion. (I was just offering one or two suggestions in the form of questions, and they just continually acted aghast at how "smart" I was, not even trying to offer any suggestions of their own.) And the one time someone did try to help, it had SO little content, and I had already done basically everything they had and more without even trying. They chose to use my work, even though I offered them an option... After that, I kept wondering if my group members were just superfluous beings who's only redeeming qualities were their ability to continually lavish praise, and then felt guilty about that thought... and tried to imagine what I might be like if I didn't feel guilty about it.

But basically, I was kind of having that frustrated feeling of being "surrounded by idiots," and just decided to envision that at the next level.

More about video games: I also don't like to steal, or kill without being attacked first. I guess it just seems wrong even in a game.

I guess I game to revel in being something else where as you roleplay to get some time to relax and be what you want to be.

Yeah... I just wanna be me, really, but because I don't have Q's omnipotence, I can't get away with it much of the time and have to tone myself down. Being a really powerful RPG character who can get away with it is very amusing for me

That's really interesting, substitute. (You don't really think Te makes them THAT much smarter than us, do you? Hmm...)

Not quite sure what you mean there, cos I wasn't thinking of 'smartness' or comparing INFJ's with other types, just thinking of what kinds of temperament might be drawn to the idea of it and what types I've known to play mages. I was thinking more inclination than competency, and also just what first came into my head (as you asked), which were the many NPC mages, who are often quite stereotype NT characters, the J ones being unhealthy obsessive people on a revenge mission and the P ones often being totally barking mad scientist equivalents.

But just for the record, I usually think of ENxP's as Chaotic types (variable good/evil). And I can easily imagine some ISFJ's I've met as being Lawful Evil. (Which I don't usually have a problem with myself, being Lawful Neutral.)

Yeah, when I'm the most Q like (read me-like, but only in games!) I'm chaotic neutral.

Take it wherever you like dear, I was thinking of video games because the thread was inspired by an exchange about them in Varelse's blog, but I'm interested in all types of gaming and the different approaches taken to it by different people.

See, I don't get that. As far as I'm concerned it's a bunch of pixels on a screen - what does it matter what I do to it? Morality don't enter into it, mate! Or am I just not getting into the spirit of the whole suspension of disbelief thing?

If you're roleplaying, that is, playing a character that isn't you and has different values and has grown up in a different world to you, I can't see any reason why they'd necessarily have big scruples about removing objects from a corpse that are no longer of any use to the corpse. Especially when removing the objects and taking them from your fallen comrade can mean an increased chance of the success of the mission the comrade presumably died in the process of, making their death not in vain. Would you prefer to leave it there for bandits, or bury it in the ground where it'd be useless?

It's not a problem with ammo or some such like that or with plot items especially but nabbing the dead guys +4 to upgrade your +2 AND keeping the +2 to sell "cause he doesn't need it" is sociopathic.

I realise that sometimes the mission must come first but I've noticed that most of the time it's just plain greed. Especially when one character has just leapt infront of a dragon say to save the party and he falls heroically, then they just shrug and begin stripping him of all his possessions based on "well if I sell it then we can re-equip better for the next mission". That's just plain wrong.

Mind you I've not met anyone else yet who deliberately killed off another person's character because it was morally reprehensible Though I did accidentally catch another character in the cross fire....had to retire that character after that. I don't fancy playing Calculon for weeks!

Hmm...characters. I can't really stomach the idea of playing a paladin, myself.

One of my Oblivion characters would do anything her superiors ordered her to do. Murder, steal, torture half the population of a town. Of course, she's be nice to them otherwise-even give the occasional coin to the beggars, investigate the townspeoples problems, etc. And then go assassinate a guard captain because of orders.

I don't obey orders well, myself.

I lurve disobeying orders. I'm well known for not taking orders off my so called superiors and for spending ages arguing back against them.

Hell it's the only time I'm armed and armoured enough to not half to back down out of some sense of self preservation.

Mind you though I'm grinning from ear to ear as I beat back the DM.

Hmm...I don't do the 'gaming' thing anymore, so don't know most of what's being talked about!! (Paladin? Mage? what??????)

But when the original Nintendo came out, continuing on through Super Nintendo, I was totally into it. I spent countless hours playing -- mostly solo, although I was **really** into, and competitive, with SuperMarioKart. My brother and I would play it all the time, and esp. got into Battle Mode by the end. To this day, I still love that game. The original one, that is. ;-)

Favorite games were of course the super mario ones, the zelda ones, metroid, super pitfall, faxanadu, kid icarus...those types.

And I guess in my mid teens when computer games started having better graphics, I enjoyed a few of the Kings Quest ones, and Zork Nemesis (I think that was the name?), and a silly little game called Loom... but it was so cute and fun...;-)

These days the only computer game I'm obsessive with is Freecell. Sigh.

Well, fantasy RPs in general...but yes.

Mage=Magic-user.

Paladin is a holy knight, usually with heal. Actually, they had these in WarCraft II, if I remember correctly.

How does this compare to the experiences of others:

Typically, what I do first is try to go through normally without a walkthrough. Then I'll be a little confused after the first level or so because I missed some things the first time through, and I'll start a new game to catch them. Then I'll usually get to the last few stages or so, and get so frustrated by something that I finally read a walkthrough, or else I manage to finish without one. Then I go back and read a walkthrough, and start a new game to get/do as many of the things I missed the first time as I can.

That's interesting. I think depending on the game, a walkthrough will seem like cheating or it'll seem like the only way to get ahead. For instance, fantasy games that have a TON of stuff to do and quests to complete and things to get will have me using a walkthrough the entire time. I just don't want to have missed some uber piece of gear that was sitting in a chest somewhere in a corner of the dungeon I've never seen. However, it is fun to try to go through stuff by myself every once in a while...just to be sure my brain IS functioning enough to solve the puzzles on my own.

But with any other kind of game, I'll consider a walkthrough as a cheat. Even MMOs don't have me looking at guides unless I'm 1) really tired or 2) really stuck and frustrated. I do love going into enemy camps and trying to sneak around and find the "easy" way in.

And I have been known to use cheats in games. But usually it's when I'm at the end of the game or I've played it before and I just feel like pushing the system to see how far and fast I can go.

I'm really one to solo in most games. Though I do love multiplayer games that are based more on fun rather than competition. In MMOs, I don't mind teaming up every once in a while, but I honestly prefer to team up with people I know well...doing so with strangers is something I've found a little draining and boring. At least with friends we know each others' play styles enough that we can allow for looser gameplay and spend as much time joking around as actually getting the job done.

My EsFP brother loves video games. Especially those multi role playing games, like maplestory and gunz. My ENFP bff also loves gaming, particularly Final Fantasy and DDR. I'm an introvert, and I don't care much for video games.
