Usually I am not overly worried about censorship, but he has a point about streaming.

And I think we do always worry about Jack Thompsons and Anita Sarkeesians, when more often than not, the censors will fly under the radar and we won’t even notice when it’s happening.

I really just find more and more reasons to want to give up on this world

Oh, and one more reason I can’t stand Ebert. Ebert was never a real creator, he was a bitter, failed filmmaker who became a destroyer, delighting in tearing down more talented persons’ hard work. Ok, rant over. Sorry

I'm not much of an action movie guy but I LOVED Casino Royale. I think I rewatched it like 5 or 6 times in the span of a few months. LeChiffre was the best "menacing without being physically imposing" style villain I think I've seen.

I'm not much of an action movie guy but I LOVED Casino Royale. I think I rewatched it like 5 or 6 times in the span of a few months. LeChiffre was the best "menacing without being physically imposing" style villain I think I've seen.

It’s a good back to basics action movie IMO. It heartens back to old school gumshoe and espionage drama with actual, interesting characters with dimensions, while retaining some fun action—but it doesn’t have to “outdo” every action movie before it either. I like how a lot of the action is reserved for the beginning and end, while the core of the movie and the real suspense is about a high stakes poker game and watching Bond actually meet a worthy intellectual rival (vs most Bond card game movie scenes that lack any real suspense and exist solely to show 007 as a smooth card shark). I like that we actually care what happens to the heroine and that the villain is morally ambiguous rather than an insane megalomaniac

Martin Campbell was a solid choice (same director who did the soft reboot Goldeneye, which also toned down the over the top shit in favor of interesting character dynamics)

Self-censorship? That may be the worst kind. That all powerful dollar at work. These companies should make a stand against governments who would censor their services. "You want to stream our services? No censorship." If we allow one person or government to define the parameters of acceptable content, everyone loses.

This a is contradictory statement. It's not freedom if you're depriving yourself of that freedom out of fear of another person or organization censoring you.

The Indian government has been hesitant to censor streaming services and would rather they keep themselves in check. This theoretically keeps officials happy

Great, so they get to stand back and say "we don't censor. See, it's the services doing it themselves. We are a free and forward thinking government."

Also Goldeneye had Joe Don Baker, and it's impossible to go wrong with Joe Don Baker.

Looking and acting very Sherriff Geronimo-like too. Though he is kind of like that in most movies, come to think of it.

“When do we go for a ride?” Max sounds like a doof in the US dub

Don’t even get me started on Toecutter. Much more menacing in the Aussie dub

Watching House of 1000 Corpses (2003) by Rob Zombie, this is hilarious. I didn't know it had actual well known people in it -- Rainn Wilson, Walter Goggins, Chris Hardwick. It even has old Matt Damon from "saving private ryan"!

Haha, the big reveal is pretty much the only memorable thing about that movie other than a few creative kill scenes. It’s grown on me though. But I doubt it would remain a cult classic without that twist, kind of like how Shymalan films are only memorable because of the twist endings

Watched "The Changeling" today (1970), with George C. Scott. For a horror movie from that time period, it's actually one of the better ones I've seen -- I was happy with it. Interesting how it based on a supposedly real life scenario about a manor in Colorado. Scott easily carried the film. The ending was a little out of the blue, since they never really defined the abilities of the ghost, but hey whatever works.

I think Poltergeist is Tobe Hooper’s movie. Everything Spielberg produced in the 80s looked like Spielberg. Tobe deserves more credit. It’s proof of his abilities with a big budget behind him

The arguments that it’s really Spielberg directing are bogus. By same reasoning, Gremlins isn’t really Joe Dante, Goonies isn’t Richard Donner, Back to the Future isn’t Zemeckis. He interfered in those productions in similar ways but we aren’t questioning those directors’ involvement

Everyone knows Spielberg was a very hands on producer, but I think because Poltergeist was the first really big instance of him branching into producing other directors, and it had that Spielberg shine to it, the rumors just stuck

This is a tough one.

Edit: I think Hans is more likable than menacing. That's a typical Tarantino thing, though. His villains are often extremely likable characters.

Y’know Bowie was being considered to play Zorin in A View to a Kill, but he told Rolling Stone he decided he “didn’t want to spend six months watching my stunt double”. Anyway, while Walken played a very physical, hands on Bond villain, I imagine Bowie, being somewhat wirey and less physically imposing, would have probably played the part more as a cunning, manipulative mastermind bidding heavies to do his dirty work. Since we’re on the topic of great villains who aren’t necessarily the most physical yet still intimidate. Those eyes would’ve been perfect too.

Would’ve been great chemistry with Grace Jones too. It looks like the producers were still somewhat influenced by their consideration of Bowie, giving Walken a head of blonde that looked a lot like DB’s hairstyle circa ‘85. And easily one of Walken’s most deliciously “over the top” performances. It’s of note that most of his prior roles were more subdued, this marks the point where Walken really started to embrace his strangeness and become a force of nature. We can credit 007 for the Walken we know and live today.

This also means Bowie and John Barry probably would’ve collaborated on the title theme. Oh what I’d give to have had those two working together. Bowie probably would’ve gotten along better with him than Duran Duran did too.
