‘GoT’ Director Admits That the Timeline of Daenerys’ Rescue Made No Sense

On Monday, Taylor told Variety,

“ We were aware that timing was getting a little hazy. We’ve got Gendry running back, ravens flying a certain distance, dragons having to fly back a certain distance…We tried to hedge it a little bit with the eternal twilight up there north of The Wall. I think there was some effort to fudge the timeline a little bit by not declaring exactly how long we were there. I think that worked for some people, for other people it didn’t…I think we were straining plausibility a little bit, but I hope the story’s momentum carries over some of that stuff.

Sure, “Beyond the Wall” had a lot of momentum, with big battles and a game-changing dragon death. But it’s also impossible to ignore the fudged timeline.

1. Lots of construction up past The Wall, and extra traffic from folks driving to see the eclipse... what's a wraith to do
2. The counter-clockwise jetstream over land and sea is really helpful for air traffic if you need to rescue someone beyond The Wall.

I'm pretty happy with the finale. The main weirdness was some logistics stuff at the beginning (Magically teleporting armies = made it hard to even know who was where).

Anyway:

Most of the scheming ended up being what I had hoped:

- Cersei lied about agreeing to fight with the north armies. YESSS! Because she never would have agreed to an alliance. Even better, Euron's weird defection just scanned as weird, but it was all part of the plot. Booya! I was actually worried about Jaime, especially after Tyrion got away with the same line. Would she really kill Jaime? Nowadays it's hard to tell, I honestly thought she might. He'd have no chance against Gregor.

- The trial at Winterfell. Booya! I was sitting here thinking it would be great if it spun around to be a trial for Baelish. Yes. I was cheering when Sansa spun it on him. All three of the Stark kids turned on him and just nailed him. And it was so appropriate for Arya to kill him with the same knife that he tried to frame Tyrion with. Also.... his throat was slit just like Catelyn's was.... poetic justice. I love too how Sansa spun all of his words on him. She has truly become formidable.

- Cleganbowl will probably happen. Booya!

- Jon and Dany... yeah, saw that coming.

- Revelation about Jon's heritage. Finally. Although I don't know how I feel about him being the "rightful" king. Down with patriarchy, lol! I mean, he's Rhaegar's son. Rhaegar was technically never king. i guess if you see the revolution as a usurpation, then yes; but if you view it as business as usual? Then who really is "rightful" in this Game of Thrones?

- Theon. I love he got beat to a pulp first. But then his emasculation actually was a boon for him in this regard. I'm glad he stood up for what he believed in.

- I guess that is one way to pass the Wall.

- Tyrion and Cersei... I was pretty nervous for Tyrion. It could have gone either way. It was a powerful scene. We don't know what they discussed after he realized she was pregnant.

- I liked all the banter in the opening sequences. Even just Tyrion telling Bronn he had missed him and vice versa. Most people don't hate each other, it's just the fight for the throne that keeps pitting them against each other.

Anyway, one of the strongest episodes of the season, thank god.

That played out just how I wanted it to.

I don't know about you, but I feel like that episode overcame most of the shortcoming of this season, and providing an explanation or justification for a lot of the things that bugged me.

Like the stuff with Bran, and some of the fact that the plotting seemed kind of simplistic, or the stuff with Theon. I guess this doesn't explain the issues with the timeline (but let's face it, that was a big problem last season, to), or the Deus ex Benjen, but it goes a long way to resolving some of the other issues.

-Cersei is a total lying bitch of course but Jamie you better get on the right side, right now. Snow is falling.
-Tyrion and Cersei I was seriously worried because I would be done with this show if something happened to Tyrion. Ok that's a lie but I'd want to be done.
-Cleganbowl. Yep.
-Sometimes having no dick is an advantage. No more Reek.
-Tyrion, Bronn and Pod. I like this combo so much but not under these circumstances.
- Nice wall you got there. Be a shame if something happened to it.

That was fucking amazing.
- Bran so matter of factly spilling to Sam then they put all their data together and boom! Aegon Targaryen.

That was so great.

I love how he tried to squirm and weasel his way out, but there was no escape. Everyone was totally who they are too....Sansa is not the fastest or the most intelligent character, but she has a slowly paced shrewdness now and has learned from so much bad experience.... especially from Baelish. She even admits all this. It's SO awesome.

Arya is merciless. She doesn't even give him time to talk, once it's decided. She just shuts him up once and for all. All the freaking crows come home to roost in that scene -- seven whole seasons' worth.

Anyway, Sansa is likely to be Lady of Winterfell indefinitely now. She will be a good one. I also like how she always wanted to marry a prince/king and be a princess... but now she is the Lady of Winterfell and isn't even thinking about marrying anyway. She is the one in charge and she needs no man. It's the natural resolution of her arc.

I was really concerned about Jaime. I guess I'll say it again. And then now I'm wondering where things will go with him.

... about the prophecy. Like, what if he rides north and does something heroic and gets killed in battle with the Night King for example? I could see Arya taking his face and using it to gain access to Cersei and strangle her to death. Or some permutation.

Anyway, it looks like that's what it comes down to.... Jon and Daenerys have to fight the undead, and then whoever survives will have to take out Cersei.

I am proud of Cersei. She was everything we knew she was, this episode. And she is the heir to her father... she learned the lessons, yes she's a ruthless bitch, but it's about fierce tribal loyalty to the people she loves / is bound to, and she is shrewd as well, and she knows the value of gold. Tywin would have played it the same way, I believe. She learned the lessons.

This was written early in August, so we already know that Gendry told Jon who he was two episodes back or so.

Which kind of leads you to wonder which claim has more bite. There are three legitimate claims. The Lannisters have less claim on the throne, except for the fact Cersei is currently the Queen. So in this game where power proves legitimacy, well, if it had been another 10-20 years into her reign, then would the other claims even matter? Again, it comes down to power.

After the Red Wedding and some other nasty incidents, you had to wonder as the episode opened whether there would be another bloodbath.

Yup. That was the problem. I thought it was Highgarden too, and then I realized it had to be King's Landing.... like last thing I knew their ships were burning at Castlely Rock and somehow they booked it across the entire continent. Lolz. It was just confusing.

But then things got better.

A part of me is genuinely worried that Tyrion's allegiance is now shifting back to his family, especially knowing that Cersei is carrying a Lannister heir. His scene with Cersei was heartbreaking and made clear that Tyrion still has a lot of love for his family.

Not sure if we will just see a conflicted Tyrion next season, or whether he will actively work to undermine Dany/Jon and strategise for a Lannister victory. That glare when Dany and Jon were heir-making down the hallway...

I think it's clear that Cersei will not conquer her enemies in the end. I just hope we don't lose Tyrion in the process.

Speaking of which wtg Martin on getting everyone to start your series with the reaction "GROSS, INCEST" and end it with "YES, INCEST" with Jon/Dany.

they shot Baelish My favourite character gradually stripped of any dignity the last couple of seasons and then set aside before revealing to us anything major...they made him a puppet and an artifice for the show. This wound shall not heal. And I didn't even read the damned books!!!

Second favourite...Theon....good god....well the "arc" was already kinda going in weird Ss (*shudders* Ss.....) but the writing is getting so bad at times now that I can't. Really? That fight?

One stupid dragon can bring down the fucking wall?? Really? So the great wall doesn't have stone in it, it's all ice? Might as well shoot a couple of fire arrows at it then.

Negative nancying aside it was a cool episode I guess. Bran looks great. He's doing a great job at reprising his role convincingly.

I can't say I'm looking forward to next season that much. I mean...the mystery is over. Kill them bad guys....get some good guys killed in the process to not make things too happy and have a good guy on the throne at the end. What else should I be looking forward to? I don't think I'm emotiaonlly as invested in it as I was the first 4 seasons or so. aI mean all that intrigue all those machinations to finally see everyone die....in a fist fight with the zombies? What's there to look forward to? There can't be any more surprises now. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Well, Tyrion typically is (1) rational and (2) above board and (3) strives to preserve balance. But yes, they hammered home that, regardless of how Tyrion and Cersei felt about each other, Tyrion loved the two younger Baratheon kids [actually just "Lannister" kids], and they cut away right after Tyrion realized she was pregnant again. I would have trouble believing Tyrion would dick over Daenerys so blatantly, considering he is a big picture thinker and believes Daenerys is the better ruler for Westeros; however, it's possible there was some kind of "deal" swung... which Cersei seemingly backtracked on immediately.




... the Mountain needs to get in some clobbering time. Aside from his insinuated assault on poor Septa Unella (gaaa), he hasn't gotten to crush anyone for a few seasons now. Now, robbed twice in one episode! What's the use of having a hulking zombie bodyguard if he doesn't get to crush your enemies?

Harrenhal melted under dragon fire. Stone is little better than ice in that situation. Plus that fire had a bluish tint to it. Not normal dragon fire anymore I'm guessing.

And that's how we get A Song of Ice and Fire.
