Leggings have come a long way. Do you consider them pants? If you see someone wearing them at the gym, are you inspired to embrace the spandex? If you see someone wearing them at the grocery store, do you look the other way quickly?

Some leggings are sheer. I have seen runners wear them and I have no complaints. But its a group choice when it comes to the Gym whether appropriate or not. I am a man that doesn't really research or know the complete technical difference. Its a preference and/or safety thing. Depends completely on environment of the people involved.

I stayed in Idaho on my way to other places, and visited a local gym near my hotel. I was the only one in leggings, with everyone else in loose pants/shorts. I originally thought the weird looks were from seeing a girl lifting weights instead of only using cardio equip. Until a lady approached me in the change room after to tell me "We don't wear those here."

I find that whole scenario bizarre. There are a lot of leggings that are made specifically for exercise purposes (the material is more durable or something idk). I have a pair and I loved wearing them to dance practices. They were much more comfortable and movable than anything else I had. I would wear sweatpants a lot too, but they would tend to get in the way of things.

Granted, I wasn't around any guys, so maybe I would feel different in that sort of a scenario.

Maybe it was a religious modesty thing? Idk.

Omg this was amazing.

Also, I don't mind. Clothes are clothes. I do think there is something a little... weird? About the leggings that make you look naked, including being the right size to show off a butt crack and all? But I don't care. Ain't nobody got time for that.

My rule of thumb is - just because they make them and make them in your size, doesn't automatically mean you should wear them. I wear capri leggings when I use the treadmill, lift weights or ride my bike. I don't wear them out and about. Yoga pants - that's a whole other thing. I wear them (loose ones) all the time.

I used to be against it but then I realized how foolish I was and how oppressive wearing pants are. it is tough to find a pair that isn't see through though. but they're soooo much more comfortable. I'm not allowed to wear leggings at work so I buy jeggings to fool them.

"Activewear" leggings or whatever the hell they are called are made of a different kind of material and aren't see through. :)

I dunno. I guess I'm just coming from a bit of a different background. Growing up taking dance classes all the time, we mostly wore tights and leotards...sometimes even out and around town if we were picking up lunch between classes. So stuff like this is the norm for me. And hey, leggings are a hell of a lot more flattering than tights. Lord, I don't miss those.

Personally, I don't know that I'd feel too comfortable wearing them just generically in a gym unless I was taking some sort of class there or whatever. BUT that doesn't mean I am opposed to others wearing them.

Practically, I agree with kyuuei and ceecee. Some body types are more suited to leggings/jeggings than others. I might see someone in a grocery store and think that their figure would be better flattered by wearing a yoga-type pant than leggings

But, people can wear whatever they want. And, I'll never judge someone who has a more substantial figure for what they wear to work out! I am just talking about - what I personally see as 'aesthetically pleasing' - from a fashion standpoint.

I like them. They are far more comfortable and flexible than regular pants. They're fine as long you can't see the buttcrack.

Without commenting on the modesty aspect (I haven't even thought about it) I will say I have a fb friend that's a professor and she is constantly reminding students that they're definitely not pants and thus not suitable for professional settings.

Er...well I mean professional settings are another matter. I wouldn't wear jeans in a professional setting either, but I wear them almost every day.

And not just college students. I got a speeding ticket a couple months ago and I went to the court to pay it. Come on man! I get not owning a suit or professional clothing, I really do. I don't understand showing up for court, unwashed, in flannel pajama pants and slippers.

I have coworkers who will wear leggings that might as well be painted on all of the time, yet I'm not allowed to wear shorts that are short, but aren't short enough to show my cheeks... therefore I resent leggings because that doesn't feel fair somehow :thelook:
