Borrowed this from other Socionics forums. I haven't checked all of these links, hopefully they are working. If not post about it here and then either I or one of the moderators can fix or remove them.
Few comments of note for those coming to Socionics from MBTI:
What is Socionics? In very short and simple terms, Socionics was derived from Jung's theory of types and functions and Antoni KÄ™piÅ„ski's writing on Information Metabolism which were combined and researched further by Lithuanian psychologist and sociologist AuÅ¡ra AugustinaviÄiÅ«tÄ— (often abbreviated as A. Agusta) to propose information model of the psyche called "Model A". Model A consists of 8 functions which can be taken on by different combinations of 8 information elements (Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, Fi, Se, Si) yielding a total of 16 Socionics types.
Notice that in Socionics the word "function" is defined differently from how it is conventionally used in MBTI discussions. Socionics "function" refers to the position and role within Model A that is occupied and undertaken by any one of the eight information aspects: Ne, Ni, Te, Ti, Fe, Fi, Se, Si. For example for type ILE/ENTp the information element Ne is found in the leading function, also called program function, while information element Ti is found in creative function, also called function of implementation. (Yes, this is akin to playing lego, where the lego blocks of Ne, Ti, Fe, Ti etc. are fitted into different slots aka functions.) In MBTI the Nx, Tx, Fx, and Sx aspects themselves are referred to as "functions" and then ordered in numerical order in terms of their "strength". On example of type ENTP, its first function is Ne, second function is Ti, third function is Fe and so on. These difference in terminology should be kept in mind by those who want to get into Socionics after studying MBTI.
The original socionics type designation consists of three letters, for example ILE, SEI, SLI, etc. The way this works is that the first letter designates the first function of the type, the second letter designates the second function, and the later letter indicates the orientation of the first function. On example of ILE: I=intuitive i.e. first function is intuitive one, L=logical i.e. second function is a logical one, E=extratim i.e. the orientation of first function is extraverted, Ne, from which it follows that the second logical function is introverted: Ne-Ti. This is the minimum amount of information needed for specifying a type. Many of those studying socionics prefer to use these three-letter designations to four-letter ones since this designation is the native one. Type translation table is located at the very bottom of this post.
The four letter type designation has been introduced later to make socionics more accessible to the West. It has the unfortunate consequences of making things more confusing when people coming from MBTI would attempt to translate their types letter-for-letter (and then of course nothing would work for them prompting them to conclude that socionics is nonsense without giving it a second thought). The conversion of MBTI types to Socionics types cannot be done directly letter-for-letter. One reason for this is that there is ongoing debate on whether it is possible to translate MBTI functions directly into Socionics information elements. Another reason is that Socionics j/p does NOT indicate Judger/Perceiver like it does in MBTI. These letters in Socionics designate a dichotomy called Rational/Irrational, where j = rational or judging elements Fx and Tx, and p = irrational or perceiving elements Nx and Sx. Whether a type is rational or irrational (j or p) in Socionics is determined by its first leading function, and not highest order extraverted function as it is in MBTI. For example a type that has first function of Fi and second function of Se in socionics is assigned a j-letter at the end (ISFj) because its first function is a rational one: Fi. In MBTI, however, such type is assigned a P-letter at the end (ISFP) because its highest order extraverted function is a perceiving one: Se. As you can see converting socionics and MBTI types letter-for-letter doesn't work since they use different criteria for j/p assignments.
It is important to write the last j/p letter in lower case when you are talking about Socionics types to distinguish them from MBTI. On example of ILE this type is written as ENTp and not ENTP. Writing all letters in upper case is a big no-no that allows experienced socionists to immediately spot clueless newbies who join in socionics discussions without reading through any of the introductory materials. Generally it's important to use socionics terminology when you are discussing socionics topics to ensure that everyone is on the same page and understand that you're referring to, and leaving MBTI terminology to discussions happening on MBTI subforums.
Socionics Introductions:
Here you can find information about the origins and development of Socionics. If you keep hearing about 'socioncs' and intertype relations in forum discussion but have no idea what all of this is about, these introductions are a good place to start becoming acquainted with socionics history, basic terminology and concepts.
Taking a socionics test is usually the first step in finding out your or your friends' socionics types, however, much alike MBTI type tests these have a certain margin of error. Reading through type profiles and studying the basics of socionics theory will enable you to further verify your type and improve your skill in typing others.
Due to being incepted in Easter Europe, many Socionics articles and profiles are available in Eastern European languages, primarily Russian. However, a few have been translated and made available for English-speaking audience as well as written by English-speaking socionists. This is a list of websites offering socionics resources in English:
In discussions that touch upon Socionics it is common to encounter posts that can be summarized as: "Socionics profile told me that my type has a square jaw and a curved forehead. This isn't true. LOL. This is why socionics is total bullshit". What these posters don't realize is that visual identification is NOT a formal part of socionics theory. Socionics types are not defined by their facial features, or the way they walk and gesticulate. Some socionics researchers accept and research V.I. and include it as part of their type descriptions, while other socionists reject and criticize it. In general, attempts to find links between visual cues and type in socionics aren't much different from what is happening in MBTI with concurrent development of methods to visually identify types (e.g. http://physiognomy.me/jung/). The basis for such attempts are numerous studies that have been done by various research groups that show that there indeed exist connections between personality and appearance.
For more information on visual identification see this page: V.I. sketches and photographs.
