The cheap and low avoid cognitive dissonance because it is emotionally painfu, while a mensch pursues cognitive dissonance as the path to learning.

Popular culture avoids cognitive dissonance because popular culture wants to manipulate us, and most of us want to be manipulated, we want to feel good, and have others think well of us. "As long as it feels good", they say, "Do it!".

Popular culture knows cognitive dissonance is emotionally painful, and knows the path to learning is cognitive dissonance, so popular culture betrays us without a second thought.

Those of us who go to church to be inspired by the preacher, or who go to the movies to see a happy ending, are taking part in popular culture, and betraying ourselves and our friends.

After such betrayal, what forgiveness?
