David Byrne’s 1986 Film True Stories Getting Criterion Release
| Pitchfork

This release will include, for the first time, the complete soundtrack of the film. Previously some of the cast-performed songs had appeared as single B-Sides, compilation tracks, and bonuses on the True Stories album reissue, but most have remained unavailable, although there was a collection featuring incidental music from the film (itself somewhat rare and only released on vinyl and cassette; long out of print). General consensus has been that the cast recordings are superior to the versions on the 1986 album, and I tend to agree--while good songs, they weren't necessarily meant to be proper Talking Heads songs (this was always more of a Byrne project than it ever was a Heads project, and the songs don't generally work as well with him on lead vocals). No word yet on whether the complete soundtrack will get a standalone release or be exclusive to the Criterion set.

Can't say I'm thrilled by the cover art for the set, but it certainly has that off-kilter, slightly unsettling feel one might expect from a Byrne or Talking Heads release. That's John Goodman, by the way, before he was famous for Roseanne and The Big Lebowski.

I’m stupid, the criterion site already answered one of my questions—soundtrack will only be available with the Blu-ray version.

I love this movie.

Yeah, it really captures the quirky individuality of small town people in a way that I think a lot of Hollywood writers don’t quite get. Byrne does it in a way that can be amusing without seeming mocking or condescending

I also feel like it captures something that's sort of vanished from the culture, but I could see coming back at some point. It just has a real sense of optimism and joy of possibilities to it.
