I hated Ace Ventura, but Cable Guy is something I will always enjoy.

*cough*
(I love how the mods are derailing this thread)

yeah, you guys really suck.

That must be some superhuman vote you have there, sweetheart. I sure don't have one. But then I'm a mere mortal, what do I know? ;)

after my grandpa heard Biden's address, he actually warmed up to him being President.

maybe others will too? my grandpa has been a die hard trumper.
I have a newfound appreciation for actual politicians. I used to just roll my eyes and  at them, "yeah whatever, it's all lies," but after hearing Trump's level of lying, seeing the toxic impact he had on the people, and enduring his braindead intellect and lack of professionalism...my god, it's so nice to hear someone get up on stage and speak with some degree of tact, grace, calm, and professionalism.

To put it a funny way, I saw a post on FB yesterday that said they were looking forward to hating the president "just the typical amount" once Biden steps in.

But yeah. Political ability isn't appreciated much until you experience an extreme case of lack of it. Trump has charisma but little true political sense.

Trump has charisma? Was it hiding in his closet? Lol jk. I don't know though, I can't say I think he has it. I don't like Biden overall, I think he's kind of creepy with the way he touches females, but he's certainly going to do a better job than Trump. I think his addressing the nation speech was more charismatic than Trump has ever been: saying he will work just as hard for those who didn't vote for him as he will for those who did, and it's time to end the demonization era, etc. It's exactly the kind of thing this country needs in order to cool everyone off and basically just not have a civil war begin. Trump divided people so much. I never really understood how many people actually follow the president like sheep and a shepherd until Trump's presidency. I don't like that people are that way, but it did make me realize how much more important that role is than I ever would've guessed before. It taught me that just because I'm more independent-minded than that and would never follow a president at all, much less off of a bridge, doesn't mean the rest of the people are that way. I sort of overestimated peoples' ability to think for themselves, in all honesty.

US-based Cubans are kind of their own thing. All the US Cuban expats are pretty devoutly anti-Big Government because of their experience with Fidel. My ex was Cuban and his family had been major Tea Party organizers following the '08 election.

Generally speaking, Latinos/Chicanos can identify as white, so it's not always appropriate to lump them in with general POC electorate.

Trump courted the black vote fairly explicitly, especially the black male vote. Him making headway within that demographic is not surprising.

I work with a Latina woman who voted for Trump because she believes in the preservation of religion and pro-life policies.

I also worked with a Latino guy who supported Trump and said that Obama's policies were more racist than Trump's.

Latinos tend to be Catholic, so many of them side with Republicans on issues of spirituality.

As much as I like to generalize, generalizations become politically disadvantageous when the exceptions to the rule become large enough to make waves.

Edit: Effective politics come down to basing generalizations on the right principles. I believe we have reached a point when some class reductionism is in order. When you have people like 50 Cent tweeting out that he's going to vote for Trump, even though he believes Trump is racist, because he wants a tax break, you know something needs to change in how we frame our politics. And of course, everyone is human.

As far as the often mentioned touching is concerned: I recently saw a program about the biographies of both candidates and when they showed Biden in mourning or consoling a father who had lost his son I noticed that Biden tends to hug and embrace intensely. Not as a superficial gesture but really feeling the other person's presence. Man, woman, old, young... it has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality, it's a physical way of expressing affection that is normal in many parts of the world (think of France and it's up to four kisses even among strangers).

Just my thoughts, looking at this as a European.

Kate McKinnon OTH is fucking great. It should just be her and Kenan as cast since they’re the only funny ones on the show

As per Jim Carrey discussion, I wholly agree that playing Biden isn't in his wheelhouse (and he does have a legit wheelhouse, but mimicking real people isn't in it), but I have to admit I *relished* the "...winner and a loooo-o-o-o-oser, a loooo-o-o-ooser" moment of this week's SNL opening.

I haven't listened to whatever Graham said, but I don't think it's entirely fear-mongering. They've abused the power that electoral college gives them so much that - if the Senate turns blue - removing electoral college is on the table. It's been what, thirty years (?) since a Republican POTUS was elected by popular vote instead exclusively electoral college. And they've only further degraded (made it more unappealing) the GOP in the last four years; the exodus of former Republicans (many of whom had been Republicans their whole lives) is nothing to sneeze at.

That being said, the subtext of what Graham is saying is, "If we give an inch of democracy, they'll take a mile!! They won't stop until every vote carries the same amount of weight and then our minority rule over the majority is DOOMED!!"

"They'll never elect another GOP candidate because we've sucked so bad and give nothing that people want?"

I guess they will have to come up with some new strategies.

That being said, the subtext of what Graham is saying is, "If we give an inch of democracy, they'll take a mile!! They won't stop until every vote carries the same amount of weight and then our minority rule over the majority is DOOMED!!"

Pretty much. The underlying content says more about his character than his overt histrionics.

I wonder how these senate races will go down. The stakes are high and the entire country now is free to focus on them.

Yeahhh... that one's been all over FaceBook. It's on point!

I mentioned this in the other thread, but basically he either has people worshipping him as a god or he repulses them. That's still charisma in play, but maybe my background in RPGs is feeding into it -- includes both negative and positive responses, you respond to him in SOME way. He used to be more positive-charismatic when younger, but now it's devolved into this "one pole or the other" thing because he's become so corrupt and cannot filter anything he thinks from coming out his mouth.

Bill Clinton was also very charismatic, esp at the height of his career, and generated similar responses... although he actually had other skills besides an ability to influence people.
