Dem/Left mismanagement of their urban enclaves has been hugely damaging to them nationally. Even in Canada/Toronto there was a huge swing right and backlash against policies that were formerly supported that has since evaporated due to Trump's anti-Canada rhetoric.

In a way, the far right and the far left elevate individuals and special groups at the expense of greater communities and so there's always a backlash pendulum.

I don't understand left/right anymore. So many of the values have shifted, I'm not sure how to think about the parties.

In the US, one party has what many call a malignant narcissistic in charge.

The other party, in my state, seems to be bent on passing laws to make basic survival, of a person like me in particular, a living hell.

The key part of "progressive" in my mind is "progress." There are some self-styled progressives who simultaneously believe the only progress ever made is in science and technology and want that progress to stop.

Populism, in my mind, means being for the people--all people. But there are many self-styled populists who want to categorize some people as not people, or worse want the majority of people not to exist.

There are a lot of poles in politics that don't align the way they used to.

Some of the political spectrum doesn't seem to have a home now, like globalists wanting people the whole world over to do well, as compared to nativism.

I meant to post about it for a while, but the notions is a "desperation small business." People start these essentially because they have no other option to survive.

Every traditional job, career, or route to survive is gone, so you need to find some way to make things work. Think about things like task rabbits, ride sharing, lawn-care, dog-sitting, and of course freelance X (where X used to be your job with benefits).

I don't blame people for doing it. I essentially had to do the same.

Poor people aren't dumb. Eventually, many of the poor small business owners will figure things out, as long as stupid things don't get in the way.

edit: To be clear, correlation does not imply causation. Though my evidence is anecdotal, I am fairly certain the direction of causation is "Destruction of jobs led to business creation."
