Hmm... you know, this is probably one of those days where I don't really have much to say. 
But yes, there was one thing:

I was quite impressed with the freelancer's algorithm, so I decided to send him an email asking to work with him as an intern. I do feel that the experience would help, and I've had some interest in cryptography for a while now. Haven't gotten a response yet, but we'll see what happens.
LESSON #12: Opportunities can arise in many different ways. All you have to do is reach for them.
