When flesh shall fade, and paper rot,
Yet through life’s graveyard, hung in mist,
One stalks the path time’s loss forgot;
Though songs long silent forge no tryst
Between old bones and new desire
To know what nature here once kissed
Its earthly joys with living fire;

When truths laid down in graven stone
And trophies of the gods they list
Shall tell their tales to dust alone,
For man’s old gold is new-consist,
And stone shall wear, and iron rust
Till who dares seek the time’s true gist
Goes but by those small signs they must:

Then some wise archaeologist
(Who long in this sole hope has mused
On still unperished shards of pots)
May judge our times the Mass, Confused,
Late Plastic Periods.

I may have already put this one up here, I seem to remember posting it in one of the poetry threads. Oh, well, I rather like this one, even if it is (or because it is) a little cynical.

At least the cynicism goes hand in hand with the humorous bathos of the ending! It's actually a more whimsical and less serious poem because of this than it appears to be for the first 18 lines :)

The unbearable lightness of being. :)
A good shot.
To see the ludicrous is sanity. A step aside. Sight is distance.
