What causes some individuals to perceive hidden meanings behind actions, items, and events? Or any meaning, for that matter?
I sat staring at a blinking red light switch of a power outlet, and began thinking of all the various things the light could represent. The light flickered on and off intermittently, much like my interest in people and their everyday lives. Construed as an entity all its own, it seemed to be clinging on to its very own life, in constant flux between complete nothingness and a carnal, quintessential red. My mind went off into several tangents for what that red light could represent. But despite my endeavor to attach value to the phenomena, it remained in reality a simple, blinking light. For what purpose does any interpretation other than a "blinking light" exist? Does it make the experience of life seem valuable? That we aren't just a species meant for reproduction in the balance of universal chaos?
Does anything then, matter? Redundant as it may be, meaning is found where meaning is applied. I could very well go through life with no passions, values, morals...anything that makes "us" generically "human." As a result, I would subsequently cease to exist as a "human being" in the eyes of a third party, though literally I would still be a human being. Down and down the rabbit hole we go, assigning meaning to that which really doesn't have to have meaning at all.
Ironic... I am searching for meaning in a thread about the search for meaning.
Have I lost you yet?
For what purpose do you give purpose?
