I've got a book by Michael Moorcock called Wizardry and Wild Romance, it sort of deconstructs the genre of fantasy and considers some authors like Tolkein as having fed into fascistic thinking, in contrast Moorcock thought that sci fi was pretty progressive, I think he was writing at a time when it would have been easier to say that because, for instance, in the star trek genre, deep space nine reintroduced religion, mysticism and had a general turning away from reason, scientism etc.
Anyway, has anyone read any other good books about writing or writers or genres they'd like to talk about.
I also read an excellent long essay by HP Lovecraft about weird fiction which had the stories he references gathered in an anthology afterwards, that was a good book, I cant quite recall its title now and I got it in a cheap format in a bargain bookstore but it was properly good.
