Speaking of burgers, it CAN work and even become an iconic scene.

For sure because people actually do talk about this stuff organically, you cant just cut in advertisment and not expect saavy visual media enthusiasts to not see the subliminal message dragginging its feet across the stage crying out: "The Sponsor's the thing!"

Saw the trailer for Haunted Mansion yesterday. Looked like marginal shite -- like, might actually achieve "average" but could be really awful based on the trailer.

Anyone actually see this thing?

“Barbie” collected an astounding $93 million in its second weekend at the box office, while “Oppenheimer” racked up about $46.2 million. Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” a movie that cost at least $200 million to make and market, took in about $24 million.

I don't know why they tried it again. The first time was because POTC worked, so they thought they could do it for other rides, too.

I don't know what the impetus now was.

Because the new business model is to go back through the disney vault and wring a few more drops of money out of other people's art in a souless corporate money grab because while art is not dead, its most likely drinking pretty heavily right now and it aint exactly absinthe or acid resuilts we're getting. Pretty sure AI and algorythms write most of Disney these days.

Pretty spooky stuff.

More and more I am seeing allegories about social media, advertizing, data privacy, and corporate culture in places I didn't completely expect...and really liking it.

The Portable Door is the latest example, but I remember liking Mrs. Davis also.

Always have loved Rebecca Hall since seeing her in "The Prestige" many years ago -- she never does anything by rote and is willing to take on darker/less beaten path roles and doesn't seem to care much whether you like her. Just fearless.

Which is great for a movie like "Resurrection" (2022) [watched it on hulu], where she and Tim Roth (an actor cut from similar cloth) have to go into some pretty uncomfortable territory and not play it as stereotypes. Their presentations feel pretty authentic. And as the story gets crazier and Hall goes more off the rails, you're not really sure how much of a reliable narrator she is until the film becomes pretty gonzo in the last 15 minutes. It's one of the films that I felt was pretty convincing while being completely nuts and also where I can only cope with the discomfort by laughing repeatedly. I've had this response to a few French neo-horror/thrillers in the 2000's decade, so that might suggest how this film will eventually go. You also get a reflection of Hall's character from her daughter, plus her lover, plus a detail/intern at work.... so it's there are multiple conceptions of her character, you can see how different people might be perceiving her behavior.

It's billed as a psychological thriller, which I suppose is as close as you might get tonally on this one.

I have a lot of thoughts on Oppenheimer, but for some reason my mind keeps coming back to how much I dislike the movie version of M*A*S*H.

For anyone wondering why I dislike the movie version of M*A*S*H (haven't watched the TV show but some say it's much better), I'll just sum it up by saying that this is "Cool Guys vs. Dorks: The Movie". (Animal House is this, but it's much better executed).

I have never see the film version. I did watch a few episodes a long ways back of the TV show and I don't recall the TV show being like that?

I'm wondering how many Barbie sequels there can be? Knowing Hollywood's tendency to flog a successful horse until it dies, I'd guess quite a few.

Haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how well it will lend itself to a franchise, but I'll be shocked if there isn't at least one sequel.

Occasionally a franchise can pull this off (Toy Story is one of them) but here? I think the problem is a studio trying to just push sequels without having a worthwhile story + approach. There's a good chance the next would flop or just became "eh, another Barbie sequel" that would pull in a regular amount of money if that -- and if Gerwig didn't do it, it would likely be radically different.

I'm already shuddering over the thought of a Polly Pocket film. And Hot Wheels could just be another Pixel "Cars" stupid franchise.

And yet Mad Max was one of the best cartoons of the 90's This CAN be done. But it requires people writing with heart and soul, not just another mass marketing campaign designed to sell merchandise. Toy cartoons of the 80's and 90's worked because the stories they told inspired a narrative that children took into their own toy play with their friends if they had any. The point of entertainment is to inspire creativity and thought through entertainment. We dont always consciously recognize this, but subconsiously we do, and our subconcious recognizes when we are being sold to and what we are being sold.

Lately, all were being sold from most places is excuses to take our money in exchange for "a taste" of nostalgia.

I can only hear it now:

"I took my 8 year old daughter and she started screaming 'Down with the f*cking patriarchy' and 'Daddy, you're Kenough" as her head spun around and around!"

I have never see the film version. I did watch a few episodes a long ways back of the TV show and I don't recall the TV show being like that?

I read the plot summary of M*A*S*H on Wikipedia and I'm now compelled to retract my characterization of the movie.

When I watched the movie, it was a crappy rainy April/March day in my old dingy Philly apartment (If I had to pick a year I'd say 2014). I 'd already felt very depressed before I watched it, I felt very depressed after. It doesn't help that the cinematography in the movie is what I would describe as muddy, and that it seemed to be constantly raining.

A big problem I had with the movie was I felt I liked the people I was supposed to dislike more than the people I was intended to like. (Whereas with Animal House, which my parents somehow let me watch in grade school, I felt it was easy to root for Delta House because all the people against Delta House are assholes or are creepy weirdos)

For instance there's a scene where Frank Burns is teaching this Korean boy to read, and Hawkeye considers this as something that must be stopped, and mocks Burns for it. He proceeds to in convincing the Korean boy to stop with the reading lessons and instead take lessons in mixology from him (and the culmination of the lesson, a drink for Hawkeye). It came off like he's training this Korean boy to be his own personal servant which was messed up; by contrast, I had a much more favorable impression of the guy trying to teach a kid to read

But when I was reading up on things in preparation for my response, there's more to it than that. In the book and on the TV series, Hawkeye actually helps get this kid into college and pay for his education. Also, Frank Burns comes off looking worse, because I remembered that the book in question he was teaching the kid to read with was a Bible, which implies proselytization.

I think my misinterpretation of the characters and the dynamics is probably way off just because I was not in a good mood when I watched this to begin with. I was also thinking of a scene later in the movie, and while I would say it hasn't aged liked fine wine, I was way off in my interpretation and is is not nearly as bad as I remembered.

But basically, everything I have to say about this movie is compromised and I'd have to watch it again to before commenting on it any further.
