No movie in Warner Bros. history has sold so many tickets so fast, the studio said of the movie directed by Greta Gerwig.

I have never see the film version. I did watch a few episodes a long ways back of the TV show and I don't recall the TV show being like that?
MASH's connection to the movie isn't obvious.

I read the plot summary of M*A*S*H on Wikipedia and I'm now compelled to retract my characterization of the movie.
When I watched the movie, it was a crappy rainy April/March day in my old dingy Philly apartment (If I had to pick a year I'd say 2014). I 'd already felt very depressed before I watched it, I felt very depressed after. It doesn't help that the cinematography in the movie is what I would describe as muddy, and that it seemed to be constantly raining.
A big problem I had with the movie was I felt I liked the people I was supposed to dislike more than the people I was intended to like. (Whereas with Animal House, which my parents somehow let me watch in grade school, I felt it was easy to root for Delta House because all the people against Delta House are assholes or are creepy weirdos)
For instance there's a scene where Frank Burns is teaching this Korean boy to read, and Hawkeye considers this as something that must be stopped, and mocks Burns for it. He proceeds to in convincing the Korean boy to stop with the reading lessons and instead take lessons in mixology from him (and the culmination of the lesson, a drink for Hawkeye). It came off like he's training this Korean boy to be his own personal servant which was messed up; by contrast, I had a much more favorable impression of the guy trying to teach a kid to read
But when I was reading up on things in preparation for my response, there's more to it than that. In the book and on the TV series, Hawkeye actually helps get this kid into college and pay for his education. Also, Frank Burns comes off looking worse, because I remembered that the book in question he was teaching the kid to read with was a Bible, which implies proselytization.
I think my misinterpretation of the characters and the dynamics is probably way off just because I was not in a good mood when I watched this to begin with. I was also thinking of a scene later in the movie, and while I would say it hasn't aged liked fine wine, I was way off in my interpretation and is is not nearly as bad as I remembered.
But basically, everything I have to say about this movie is compromised and I'd have to watch it again to before commenting on it any further.
