How tall would 16 buildings need to be to house the world's population? (split)

we'd need prplchknz for the greatest derail web possibilities

Hey sis.
Just thought it was interesting!

ok so I mean the derail rate is pretty straightforward at first so if we just have one thread creating another thread and that's it (one use threads, single sub thread) then you end up with 365 threads after 365 days. So you need something that can be more effective at generating a geometric growth (like life is for exemple with cell split filling the universe in a matter of days /weeks given unlimited resources)

EcK - To answer the spots that Ivy missed in the move:

uploading/scanning would be the best solution for a huge number of reasons, as long as you don't mind the technically dying part, but I am not sure if earth's orbit is the best location.

On One hand you want to save the extra load on your heat radiators, which means you want as little sun as possible, but on the other you want good solar collection nearby. Also setallites on earth have a limited lifespan, in part because the exact center of earth's gravity kind of shifts around with the spin, not by much but enough to give us a hard time... You could solve all 3 problems by putting it in a geocentric point just behind Mercury.

i think if we lived in tunsia (all of us) a bunch of introverts would die or commit genocide from not enough alone time, this seems like a terrible idea. "just because we can doesn't mean we should."

My mother's boyfriend is from Tunisian ancestry. Now I know why they left.

Overcrowding? He is very ISTJish, and they need their personal space. I mean have you seen Cimarron's apartment? It's a very nice apartment.

Personally I would go for something smaller with more utility. Like this

...But I suspect that when self-driving systems for road vehicles becomes mainstream, so will a lot of people. It will be interesting to see it's impact on architecture.

Let's not derail the split thread, too. It could be its own interesting topic were it not junking up somebody's type-me thread.

Instead of all of us, why can't you be the one to adapt instead and change the topic to "Everything"?

Because the person who started the thread about their type didn't want to talk about "Everything."

of course it would be even MORE fun if there was more than one split from a thread in the course of a day... we could be talking about things that are much more fun to graph! :holy:

Wait why are you studying disasters?

were I studying disasters, it would be for fun

studying the command systems put into place under DHS to deal with them is not a thing of pleasure, but it is required to complete the FEMA courses for my EMT class :(

huh wait what why?

indeed

on another note, wouldn't diseases like typhoid and cholera be a major problem in an overcrowded environment of the sort? and wouldn't it be like the towers in the megacities in Judge Dredd?

in EcK 's defense, figuring out exactly how likely the person is to happily follow a hypothetical tangent can sometimes be helpful in indicating one's type...

not always though

This thread, I don't think we care what you do with it, as long as it's not to carry over conflict that is now irrelevant.

That's kind of what I thought. That would be a problem. Unless they had some sort of bio-filters that could isolate and contain dangerous pathogens.

derail the split thread

That's actually quite interesting. What if we kept derailing a thread at the rate of 1 split thread a day starting off with one split derail.
How long would it take to create more derails than admins could handle and therefore stop the malicious geometric growth of the multi-derail-verse
The answer is one day.

Because I'd just get around the problem altogether by moving the original derail to Fluff or Graveyard. No such thing as off-topic, so no threads to split. I'd sip on a martini and congratulate myself on a job well done, having allowed the adminning to take care of itself. No downside whatsoever.

Or, we could use discrete-event simulation to look at the whole thing. Usually exemplified by, like, customers in lines at the grocery store, arriving at some rate and being processed by cashiers at some other rate. Then you can do some analysis on the whole thing etc.

So my answer is "Either (a) one day, or (b) I don't know, but I can build a huge freakin needlessly complex model to help us figure it out."

^Yeah, I figured I'd be generous since it was kind of an interesting topic anyway, and I wanted to convey that we weren't down on the topic itself, just honoring the wishes of the person who started the *personal* thread it occurred in.

How do you think hospitals work? ;)

So you are saying we need to apply an ultra violent fascist regime to make this work? That might not be a bad idea...
