okay, I'm opening this up again. Because I've got a lot clearer idea of what I want from a job. I'd like to see if anyone can suggest a job where I'd thrive and also enjoy myself.
Top 5 general skills/traits
Innovative
Perceptive
Flexible
Adventuresome
Creative
Other useful things (maybe a redundant section)
Strong at maths (and enjoy it)
Have Physics and Electrical Engineering degrees
Interested in writing (though no professional training)
Love mentoring and probably need it as some part of my job
Like solving difficult problems
Like to experiment and test things
Like to improve the world and what I'm interacting with in some way
Like to increase my understanding and that of people around me
Like to grow and help others around me grow
Like improving processes or methods while problem solving
Have an interest in some arts: music, writing, photography, maybe acting or film
Have an interest in most sciences, especially space and the fundamentals (i like asking why over what)
Have an interest in communication styles
Dislike step by step process based solving of problems
Dislike technical speak
Ideal Job
Mentoring
High level problem solving (creative solutions)
Innovation
Experimentation and testing
Writing
Improving world
Increasing my understanding of people and surroundings
Troubleshooting
Not long-winded highly-technical projects or jargon (just not a mass of data and details without looking at underlying concepts)
Improvement of processes and methods (ie. evolution of approach)
room for or interaction with arts. (ie. music, writing, photography, acting, etc)
improving understanding and communication within the business
Problems with some investigated careers
Management consulting - have little interest in business or the economy, more science and the nature of things
Engineering consulting - Not a specialist in any area at this stage
Space - I'd love to do something related to space but limited space related jobs in Australia.
Space - I have an interest in space travel and discovery of things beyond Earth but prefer inventing to observing or datamining. I'd considered maybe something to do with telescope optics which sort of bridges to photography, or with space vehicle design.
Physics Research - So far has been too process based and not really grabed me as much as I'd like. There are patches when we are on something new and cutting edge and the ideas are flowing and fun, but mostly it feels like plugging away for little reward. Maybe also too introverted industry for me, because I like to bounce ideas off people when problem solving.
Teaching - I like mentoring students, but prefer university aged over school. I also prefer the one on one teaching to lecturing to a class.
This is more for an idea of where I'm going than somewhere I can instantly jump to. Any suggestions of cool jobs or careers to try would be great.
