Recognizing different characters/lettering

I had no idea what forum to post this in. Anyways...
My family and I frequently shop at a small Asian market near where I live. It's hard for me to distinguish different languages on packages and such. Do any of you have experience recognizing Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters? Also, my older brother is trying to teach himself Japanese. My mom has sent him books and such, only to hear that they were in the wrong language.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hangul is Korean, hanzi is Chinese, if you see kana in between hanzi / kanji it is Japanese.
