How important are labels to you?

I really can't think of an answer for myself, but I want to hear what you guys think because this site basically revolves around them (mbti, enneagram, socionics, ect).

They are sometimes convenient and very prone to stereotyping. However, some of my labels are very important to me and a part of my identity.

They are helpful for categorizing. Like when you peruse music to buy and it’s labelled by genre. But, then you might purchase a song labelled as “Alternative” and find that it also represents elements of ‘Rock’, ‘Hip Hop’ and ‘Trance’. So, the generalized label falls short of addressing all the complexities found within.

Or a bottle of BBQ-sauce may be labelled as such and may provoke a certain expectation of taste in the purchaser. But, is it tangy? Sweet? Vinegary? Smoky? It has to be tasted for the full flavour to be discerned.

Same with labels for people. Helpful on one level and limiting on another.

Labels help me categorize people in order to interact with them more efficiently, however instead of judging them or set certain expectations based on that label, I prefer to observe and take notes..
I don't get offended when someone tells me I sound like this or that type, because they don't know me properly they're doing it only based on how I interact on the forum how could they know otherwise?? That must be taken into consideration, besides, I would be interested to know how I'm percieved by others (I can take notes of that too so.. Yep)

The utility of a label as a convenient shorthand is inversely proportional to the ambiguity and disagreement as to what it means.

I have given too much power to labels recently-ha was just going to label myself by saying its not good for me as a 9..

But really... I mean some situations are requiring of labels I suppose- but I mean, definition, using labels to define yourself as a person.

Im gunna hop on the *bad bad* boat.

Labels organize the world for me. If they are accurate I use them as much as I can. Pretty much everything get labeled in my mind.

I like to print out what type I think people are with my label maker and stick it on their forehead.

Does anyone else see the irony in misspelling the thread title?

Labels are something to play with. While helpful, nothing matches the labels so i prefer to use my understanding of the person above and beyond labels. Alot of the times conotations such as statistically probable are tied to a label and while its statisticaly probable i like to know all the intricacies and details to playwith as well.

Labels are great. If I could, I'd use my label maker on everything that would hold still long enough for me to slap one on.
