The last time I checked this new Corona virus had a letality rate similar to that of the common flue, meaning those who died were mainly elderly and/or immunocompromized. Am I missing something?

Also, considering how enormous China is and how small the percentage of infected Chinese people is, I am seriously worried and somewhat disgusted by the hysteria and more or less open racism this is bringing to the surface.

There are Asian looking people here in Europe being treated like they carry Ebola just for looking Asian. A British journalist with Vietnamese roots pointed that out in the Guardian (I have also heard and seen it elsewhere) and a good part of the online reactions were either "that is only natural, stop complaining about racism or move elsewhere" and "but what about racism against black people in China? He should talk about that or he loses credibility" (the British guy with the Vietnamese roots talking about an issue in the UK, mind you). It is similar here in Germany and probably most parts of Europe and North America from what I can see.

I'm in an unspecified Asian country. Not China, but with a significant Chinese enclave that has already brought the virus. I'm penniless, and living in a dorm with 15 others. It might get ugly.

You know the meme about being a billionaire? You're closer to being homeless, because you are not 3 good months away from being a billionaire, but you're 3 bad months away from being homeless. You know that one? I'm about two bad weeks away from being homeless.

If I contract it, let it kill me. I am very likely to contract it. I can afford to die, but not to get sick. Fuck my life.

SARS had a much higher death rate, but was so lethal (40%) that no one tried to evade treatment.

The coronavirus has only a 10% kill rate, but a very long incubation phase (14 days) and mild initial symptoms. As such, it spread worldwide far quicker and far wider.

It isn't a flu. Ebola is really deadly, but it kills so fast that it rarely spreads. As such, it usually just kills off a village and stops.

If a billion get exposed, we could see 100 million dead.

The NY Times published a chart last night showing how fast this is spreading. WHO is treating it extremely seriously. The US is requiring mandatory quarantines of anyone that gets it. Flights are getting canceled.

All this is likely too late to stop the spread. The death toll is climbing very quickly.

I thought Novel Corona had a 50% death rate? Or has it changed?

The CCP/China (or any nation for that matter) isn’t going to quarantine entire cities and millions of people and risk economic paralysis for the common flu. This situation is very serious. If we pay attention to anything it should be to the actions they’re taking and the actions other countries are taking as well. No one should be treating this like just another flu season. It’s scary but ignoring it isn’t going to make it disappear. I’m stocking up in case of a lockdown. Hell, it’s a good idea to have a least a couple of weeks of provisions in any case for natural disasters etc.

Even if this thing doesn’t kill large numbers of people, it’s virulent and stealthy in it’s transmission. Society and the health care system can easily become overwhelmed by the number of people temporarily struck down by this. At least here in the US we rely upon goods being shipped from all over the country. If those shipments of food/medicine stop because large swaths of the population are incapacitated, it could get interesting. Stay safe.

I seen some videos of what is going on in China, that I cannot post here as they are extremly graphic. But I seen people having seizures and hallucinations, while coughing up blood. They are just letting bodies lay around in the streets in the quarintined cities. They do not have enough testing kits either. It is fucking hell over there. My friends jokingly called it Raccoon city, and its turning out to be that.

I also read something about there being multiple strains, and its being covered up by flu statistics. I read an article the other day about an entire school being shut down do to the flu. 600 kids all affected at once.

Neither. From what I could find in trustworthy media the new Corona has a letality of 2-3 % (which is indeed comparable to the 1-2% of most forms of the flue).

Where do you guys get the 10 or even 50% from???

Im referring to how many of the companies here came directly from China, as in they are the first generation. Aka their families are still in China, and are likely to go visit them there. Not that they have the virus cuz they are Chinese. Think.

Spotting sarcasm is not your strong suit. Furthermore - United, Delta, and American airlines are halting China flights.

I truly hope everyone worried about this virus has a flu shot. 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died in the 2018-19 flu season. This happens every year and the people most susceptible to the flu are most susceptible to Corona.

Never heard anything close to a 50% death rate from the Corona virus. Don't even want to know what kind of whacked media that's coming from.

Yes, by all means. I'll run right out and do that. My father and uncle nearly died after getting a flu shot. My mother actually got the flu after getting a flu shot.

Scary shit but I tend to take extra precautions as it is due to having a young kid.

Wash your hands and limit your trips from home as much as possible. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in I’m your car or pocket for when hand washing isn’t an option. Hope public health officials aren’t total idiots.
