There's a great deal of variation within the horror genre.
I honestly don't think it's always about "being desensitized to violence" either because realistic or real violence still upsets me, I'm not a violent person, and I'm much more emotionally affected from a drama. My ex watches some of the most violent horror movies ever made, but he also watches subtle psychological or supernatural horror, and openly cries over sad movies.
