I've tried asking questions like this too, but the scenario messes things up a lot of times.

It may be more direct to just ask "if you would be willing to sacrifice yourself for 4 other people if there was no way to save yourself"....but then the "it depends" answer is too easy.

Anyways, if the scenario was such that either all five of us end up dead or just I do, rationally, I would elect for just me. So I guess "cut off the rope," is my official answer. But in that scenario, i'd probably be to worked up to notice or think about any of this.

Thats a good answer if its what you would really do. Why not? Whether it could actually happen doesnt matter. What matters is that you would chose that option.

Still, the question really wasnt explained very well.

Wait, if I wasn't on the rope because I was sacrificing my life to save my friends, now they're all dead and I'm still alive!

    Wow... talk about divine karma!

I totally understand intellectually what you are saying.

I am saying that it's literally like I open my mouth and nothing comes out even when I try -- i can't give a serious answer to a question that makes no sense to me.

    oh...ok

but then you would also know that the ladder should be able to hold 4+ people. what you would nto know is this chopper just came back from another emergency mission (where the rope for 4+ got frayed) and that now its using emergency supplies that include the rope that can only hold 4 people

so you ARE stuck in a bind

All die/you choose to save the rest 4

No one is rescued...and all stay on the mountain?

I don't get this!!! It doesn't make sense!

    My thoughts exactly.

I chose to believe in scenario (A) because its more interesting. =D

If they were people I loved, I'd gladly stay so that they could live. If they were complete strangers, I'd probably weigh the value of 4 lives to 5 deaths and figure it isn't worth it and I'd cut the rope for the greater good. The reasons would be different, but the result I guess would be the same.
    Embrace the possibilities.

How'd you be able to tell that it'd break after a minute? And how do you know that it can only take four people? That seems oddly specific. You could cut yourself off and it could still break due to your crappy estimations. And if you're the fifth person, wouldn't you be close enough to the ground that you wouldn't necessarily die on contact? Especially considering you said "more than a minute", implying that you'd just climbed onto the ladder, or you'd be on for longer than a minute and it wouldn't matter.

I'd just drop to the ground until one person had reached the helicopter, and then get on the ladder. I can't imagine I'd die from cold waiting for one person to climb on the helicopter, because then we'd all die from the cold while waiting for everyone to climb up.
