Intertype Dynamics is theory of how types relate to each other, by the functions they share or do not share. While Socionics has a well developed (and fairly familiar) system of this, MBTI ("Western type"), also has one, not as well known, provided by the Type Logic site.
Type difference (X vs y) | Type Logic relationship name | Functional difference | Socionics code | Socionics Relationship name |
Completely compatible | (Same "Intentional Style") | (same quadra)
XXXX | Identity | —The same type | XXXx | Identical (Idn) |
yXXX | Pal | differing only in I/E; same preferred functions | yXXy | Mirror (Mrr) |
Xyyy | Supplement | same primary functions, two “blocks” reversed | Xyyy | Activity (Act) |
yyyy | Anima | All four primary functions in reverse | yyyx | Duality (Dlt) |
Incompatible | Opposite Intentional Style (all functions mutually in "shadow") | Alternate quadra (A-G or B-D)
yXXy | Contrast | (also called “opposing personality”); same function order, but attitudes reversed | yXXx | Contrary (Cnt) |
XXXy | Complement | type with opposite J/P, which orients preferred functions differently | XXXy | Quasi-identical (Qid) |
yyyX | Novelty | type sharing only J/P, which orients opposite functions | yyyy | Conflicting (Cnf) |
XyyX | Enigma | McAlpine, “Dynamic Opposite”; all eight function-attitudes in reverse order | Xyyx | Super-Ego (Ego) |
Rationally compatible | Intentional Style with common judgment tandem | Adjacent quadra (A-B or G-D)
XyXX | Neighbor | common rational function in same position (and rest of the arm or spine) | XyXx | Comparitive (Cmp) |
yyXX | Counterpart | one’s dom. is the other’s aux. | yyXy | Supervision (Sp)* |
XXyy | Advisor | one of one’s preferred function is other’s tert. or inf; with common I/E and S/N “language” | XXyy | Benefit (Bn)* |
yXyy | Pedagogue | one of one’s preferred function is other’s tert. or inf.; opposite I/E | yXyx | Semi-duality (Sdl) |
A-rationally compatible | Intentional style with common perception tandem | quadra A-D or B-G
XXyX | Companion | common a-rational function in same position, and by ext., the rest of the arm or spine | XXyx | Look-a-like (Lkl) |
yXyX | Tribesman | one’s dom. is the other’s aux | yXyy | Supervision (Sp)* |
XyXy | Suitemate | one of one’s preferred function is other’s tert. or inf. | XyXy | Benefit (Bn)* |
yyXy | Cohort | one of one’s preferred function is other’s tert. or inf.; opposite I/E | yyXx | Illusionary (Ill) |
- We "Supervise" type with aux. function as our dominant; and opposite other function
- We "Benefit" type whose aux. is our dominant in opposite attitude, and whose dominant is our tertiary
