Tess: ISFP
Not ISFJ, the way she deals with her feelings is above all passive (Fi) and she does'nt deal with her surrounding by remember details and others stuff like that (Si), but is totally immersed in her surroundig and hardly sensible to. It's really obvious in some passages. She's actually independant but always in conflict between her internal subjective ethics (
internal the way she deal with is totally personal, she don't care for the Joan's advice for example), and her natural sensuality (Se). She's hardly more reserved from socials rituals and people than ISFJs usually are. She still detached and reserved at the begining of the novel, during the ball (she even dance with a girl! ISFJ don't do that!
), detached and reserved from other peoples when she works for the Stoke-D'Urbervilles, and at the Talbothays too... She has not Ne inferior, actually, she show an acute sense for drama, art and estethic, a strong poetic sense and an extremely deep sensitivity to her surrounding wich sounds more ISFP (I think for example, for the passage where Angel play harp). She has on the other side, Te inferior, she is'nt able to control anythinbg, and actually never try to control. She has just her values judgments and accept things according to this. She actually never try to defend her interest, because of her internal conflict and value judgments, except at the end when she kills Alec...
Angel: INTP (but I don't reject that interesting typing as ENFJ, though)
She does'nt seem to be a J at all, at the contrary, he's more a guy who procrastinate and has difficulty to take decision, and is'nt concerned for carrierist views. The most important things for him is the intellectual independance and his own convictions, whatever other peoples can think about it. And is seeking for thruth isn't relyed with humanitarian concerns like it usually the case with ENFJ (just guessing, perhaps I don't know ENFJs enough, but actually, I know a few ENFJs who have also been typed as INTP...). He does'nt approach peoples in a afective way, and does'nt deal easily with his feelings, even with Tess. It's just when he learn the truth about Tess that he makes values judgment about her, but prefer to don't express it and just to be isolated from her. And when he's isolated, his become again objective.
