Quality is kinda odd. I know it when I see it. I know it when I feel it. For instance, The Leopard, by Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is a novel of the highest quality, yet when compelled to read, The Leopard, at school, the perception of quality disappears.
On the other hand, so many of us revel in the low, cheap and ugly. I think it is a passive form of aggression, particularly towards ourselves.
The low, cheap and ugly are a way of getting our revenge on the world. The low, cheap and ugly are an expression of ressentiment which is frustration and hostility which we are powerless to express to a hostile and indifferent world.
And being powerless to express our feeling, we dirty the world and ourselves with the low, cheap and ugly.
And being so powerless and so hostile we can only express our ressentiment in company. We seek to do it with others.
Some take our ressentiment to extremes with self harm such as cutting our selves with razor blades, see what you made me do, we unconsciously say.
And all the time, quality is all around us and that is what ressentiment hates most of all, ressentiment hates the ubiquity of quality and seeks to debase it.
I would rather have the low, cheap and ugly than enjoy the quality of the world, says ressentiment.
