Northern Exposure was a nice show about a city slicker doctor (Joel Fleischman) appointed to the small rural town of Cicely/Alaska (actually Rosyln, Washington State) as compulsory service to pay off his scholarship fee to the state.
He scoffs at the idea and the location at first but he has no option but to go there. Once he gets there he finds the facilities quite lacking but in time the eerie spirit of Cicely and its peculiar people seep into him and he gradually warms up to the townsfolk.
There's no overarching theme besides the doctor's love interest and every episode handles a specific theme, which usually involves some sort of personal problem between the wacko characters of the town.
The main characters are:
Doctor Fleischman, picky and smartass but lacks practical skills
Maurice, prominent local landowner, retired astronaut and also owner of the local radiostation
Holling the Barkeep, hot & cold relationship with Maurice
Shelly, Holling's hot wife
Maggie, tomboy bushpilot
Marilyn, Doctor's sly native american assistant
Chris, Local radio host and a hippie romantic
Ed, Goofy shaman wannabe
Ruth-Anne, local convenience store owner
The show is quite good in the first 2 or 3 seasons but then the cast and the writers gradually get exhausted and lose enthusiasm and then it becomes mediocre towards the later seasons.
