New Mutants Officially Begins Pre-Production | Screen Rant
Not sure how I feel since X-Men movies are a crapshoot in terms of solidity/quality. Still, New Mutants was one of the first "new series" that I remember starting to collect, I actually bought issues 1 through 80 or more right off the shelf. They're not in the greatest of shape since I actually read my comics, but I own them. What was really interesting is that they went from the art style of Bob McLeod (which was pretty conventional along the lines of the Buscemas of the time period) to freaking Bill Sienkiewicz. I had no idea who Sienkiewicz was at the time, and I was so used to conventional art that I remember not liking it... and now when I look back, guess which artist I think is really rocking? Yup, Bill Sienkiewicz. Once my sense of art had matured, I could recognize what he was doing in the book and look back at it fondly. It was likely one of his first advances into comics. (I have other works he's done since, including the old Elektra graphic novel he did with Frank Miller.)

I do have to say that they did win me over somewhat by casting Anna Taylor-Joy as Magik, seemingly. Magik (Illyana Rasputin) is easily one of my favorite Marvel characters, and Taylor-Joy one of my favorite new actors ever since I saw her in "The Witch" last year. She's been in a few things since, and even when she's in a dog of a movie (like "Morgan" last summer), she elevates the project. (Folks might also recognize her as the female protagonist from Shyamalan's recent "Split" film with McAvoy.) She just has a real presence on screen, kind of how Jennifer Lawrence does, except Lawrence seems far more extraverted in her approach while Taylor-Joy is rather enigmatic. Anyway, ever since I saw Elle Fanning in Super 8, Taylor-Joy's the next young actress I ran across who I felt has the "zing" or whatever you want to call it.
Still, Josh Boone is kind of an unknown quantity. he's been attached to some interesting projects but maybe too fast and too soon, and probably his biggest claim to fame is directing "The Fault in our Stars," which was an okay movie (better than Paper Towns) but pretty much mainly because it starred Shailene Woodley (who is also talented and could carry any inadequacies in the script). Then again, if he is choosing to introduce the New Mutants through the "demon bear" storyline, then that shows more depth to him than just a high-action glitzy surface-level story spinner. It's also got elements of horror in it, or can be spun that way.
...Boone’s New Mutants is reported to make its theatrical debut early next year. Based on the comic book of the same name, New Mutants will follow recent Xavier School graduates Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock as they learn to control their powers and, of course, fight bad guys like Demon Bear. James McAvoy may also reprise his role in the film as a young Professor X. It’ll reportedly be a young adult-style movie but with a twist since it has been described as Stephen King meets John Hughes.
Now Boone on his Instagram has revealed that New Mutants will begin filming very soon and has officially begun pre-production...

New Mutants - WikipediaIn May 2015, 20th Century Fox announced Josh Boone will direct a film adaptation of the New Mutants. Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg will be producing the film, while Boone and Knate Gwaltney are writing the script. Boone and Gwaltney initially pitched the film to Kinberg and Fox by making a comic book mapping out a trilogy of "New Mutant" movies using panels from the original issues.[37] In October 2015,[1][38] Boone tweeted that the first draft for the script is complete.[39] Kinberg has stated that the film will be a young-adult style movie.[40] On March 31, 2016, HitFix reports that Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy were rumored to be cast as Wolfsbane and Magik.[41]Boone announced on his Instagram account that the second draft for the film is finished.[42] Boone posted a photo on his Instagram page showing that those appearing will include Magik,[43] Wolfsbane,[44] Mirage,[45] Cannonball,[46] Sunspot,[47] and Warlock.[48][49] Kinberg told Collider in an interview that Professor X will appear and filming may start in early 2017 and told That Hashtag Show that the film is very loyal to the comics.[50][51] On August 25, 2016, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Boone will re-team with his The Fault In Our Stars writers Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber to write the script.[52] On November 9, 2016, Kinberg announced to The Hollywood Reporter that filming will start in spring next year.[53] At almost the end of the month, Coming Soon.net reports that Demon Bear would be the main antagonist in the film, the site also reveal that 20th Century Fox is currently targeting a Spring 2018 release date, the film's tone is describing as a "Stephen King meets John Hughes-style horror movie" and that Nat Wolff is being eyed for the role of Cannonball.[54] In December 2016, it was announced that the film would begin production in May 2017.[55] That same month, Boone told Creative Screenwriting that the film inspired his script from Chris Claremont's run with Demon Bear.[56] On January 5, 2017, Taylor-Joy confirmed in an interview with Superhero Hype that James McAvoy will be reprising his role as Professor X in the film.[57]
