Actually I read this contest in the New York Times to submit an piece of writing in March to them to the prompt of "Modern Love" (winner gets published into the series of columns), archive of the Modern Love columns. I'm no good writer, and I was busy, but here were my generalized thoughts anyway:

A) What is love? (Oh baby don't hurt me. ;))
Throwing around "love" all the time is all well and good, but who's to say I know what love is.
The only person I know I love is my little brother. He entered my life ~16 yrs ago. I'd complained for a little sibling to entertain me. I was sort of disappointed when it was a boy and absolutely devasted when I realized how annoying and attention-taking he would be.
Actually, that was the worst. Discovering I had power over someone. Someone I could hit or hurt or be nice to and treasure- someone who would take it and possibly change and ... would be shaped by me. That encompassing struggle- me acting upon my own impulses based on selfish desire and being hit afterwards with fear that I'd messed him up forever. We're older and more mature now, so it's less of a conflict (we're better at controlling ourselves and the power is more equally dispersed).
Is that love? Wanting to protect something from yourself? Wanting to change? Having power over someone?
Is it you (you meaning yourself and the people you love) against the world? I

b) What is modern?
Before I read the archive, I assumed they meant new technological advances and new social structures by the meaning of "modern" (the archive suggests that mean anything recent... the phenomena don't necessarily have to be tied specifically to a current movement, etc).
