The tendrils of the living passion vine
Bound tightly to the front wall of this house
Hold fast, despite the season, and carouse
With fruit and flower ripened one same time,

As though the sun, descending, went to mine
More golden seams from their old native south
To feed these hungry leaves. But in my mouth
The flesh becomes insipid, in decline;

Exotic blooms fall martyrs to the frost
And prove our sun-kissed honeymoon, ungowned
Intruding with its pale and failing leaf.

But we still tend it, must not count it lost!
This year, with gentle care, it may be sound
To brave once more the coming mortal thief.
