Maybe only do the minimal amount of planning required to ensure you think about why you eat, before you eat? There is nothing inherently wrong with the smell of food making you realize you are hungry. You just want to create a habit where you take a moment to think about what you want out of the meal before actually chowing down.
... I know, I know. Easier said than done when you are in the thrall of hunger. I'm just throwing ideas out. Exert control of when you experience the triggers (in other words, when you put yourself in situations where you have to smell food 2-3+ hours after you last ate), you may be able to gain more control of your diet as well.
