Exactly.
Emo was a mid-late 90's cultural underground development, and by the late 90's - early 2000's it was already a largely stereotypical and non- to partially-underground social scene, made up, I'd wager, by at least 50% posers.
The Indie rock scene developed at the same time but was separate, but in some people's minds (mainly outsiders) Indie kids and emo kids are the same (this has been a misconception for years now). But by now, both groups are largely made up of people in it for the social aspect. So anyone could be emo whose friends are emo. It could be full of SJ's, SP's and NF's, (and maybe NT's) but I'd argue that to identify with EMO you probably have to be an F. ST's are known for using the slur "gay" to describe how lame being emo is.
"Indie rock" is just the new term to replace "alternative rock" after the term alternative rock was taken over by the mainstream radio in the early 90s and made generic. Indie rock music now is clearly derivative of the alternative & college rock of past eras. There were other terms before that also... Music is so hard to define, that I get a headache every time I discuss these terms though
I think emo tends to be ISFPs, if we're talking emo as a subculture and scene, not so much the streamlined trend that has emerged (which is probably whatever types like to hop on the bandwagon :cough:ESFPs:cough: ). It seems more of a sensory thing, as style is emphasized, and there's expression of feeling, but it's not particularly poetic. I notice the lyrics being much more direct, with less abstraction and metaphor.
As far as being emotive and drawn to dark things, then that may be any IxFx, even INTP's & ENFx's too. I would see NFs as more "indie" than "emo" though. It tends to be less about image, and it features more "out there" poetic lyrics. The music is less palatable to mainstream because of that. I think in another thread Candyland Joe described certain INFP music as swallowing glass and ISFP music as honey
. That's all generalizations of course...
Ultimately, I think any type can listen to any kind of music. I think who
makes the music is more related to type than who gets into a scene. People get into music for such a variety of reasons, and sometimes we like something for the very reason that it expresses how we feel in a way we cannot do ourselves.
