Any recommendations for some fun shows with a scifi/horror/fantasy aspect?
If you have Apple TV+ (if you've got a Target account check and see if you get a free trial - I did, for like 4 months), Severance and Shining Girls. On Netflix, Locke & Key, Midnight at the Pera Palace, Love, Death, and Robots, iZombie, Hemlock Grove, Sabrina, Lucifer, Outlander, Living with Yourself. On Hulu, American Horror Stories and the regular AHS (some seasons but not others lol), The Handmaid's Tale, Dirk Gently, Timeless. On Amazon, Upload. Others: Person of Interest, Tru Calling, Lost, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies. I'll probably think of others and come back. Sci-fi and fantasy are two of my favorites.

On Netflix, Daybreak, maybe Mindhunter if you consider that horror/no sci fi or fantasy, maybe Ratched (horror? anyway, really good), The Haunting of Bly Manor, Maniac is really good.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Large e1 was enjoyable and funny, even if not quite stellar. It would be nice if they learn how to thread the needle better to give the character more depth by season end, but even as just a comedy it was actually amusing and true to the comic tone. It was nice to hear more from Bruce too, since he was getting schlunked in the films, and know more of his back story in integrating.

It's funny to listen to him describe hanging out with Tony, who couldn't stop drunk-whinging about Steve Rogers too.

The humor occasionally crosses out of family friendly, which surprised me a bit, but hey the comic was irreverent too.

The media trope of characters removing their glasses as a way of having their glow up will never not annoy me

Solar Opposites... I'm not sure what's wrong with me. But I really find that show...watchable. I don't like it perse. I dont hate it. It's pretty bleak but funny. The aliens are there and relatable in some ways. The tiny people in the Wall saga...that's what I show up for, that is like...it connects to something deep inside I can't quite put into words.

Yeah. I think they should have taken the show from those two instead of letting them just rush it. They should have found some show runners who wanted to be attached. I'm sort of glad they lost their SW project and havent found more work. You may be a whore for your art, but dont try to be it's pimp.

She-Hulk S1E4 was pretty lousy -- noticeable step down, which is weird since chunks of it were in the series promos.

The series is mostly light-hearted fluff and has be-bopped along for a few episodes -- not super-great, but enjoyable in the moment. The writing for this episode just wasn't funny. In fact, it was just really bad. This was tedious to sit through and didn't seem to offer anything for the series, like a filler episode. Thye could have done so much with this concept and it just was really unimaginative and not amusing.

---

Disney+ is having "Disney Day" but not a very good one. Besides the crappy She-Hulk episode, there's a Simpson cartoon that was absolutely terrible (most of their cross-franchise episodes have been not so good, but this is one of the worst -- "Oh, look, we put Disney villains in Simpson's animation, aren't we just wonderful?? gush gush"), and Love and Thunder also released on streaming today... an average film, Waititi's done better in the past. And a Cars clip? Probably the worst Pixar franchise out there? Nothing else looked interesting. Is this the best they can do to drum up new business?

It's really kind of shocking how they have all this money and resources but Phase 4 MCU, Disney live-action, Pixar, and whatever else have been a real downgrade in the last year or two. Resting on their laurels as if the franchises themselves justify their own existence and quality, rather than actually doing some hard creative work.

If you want to see the future...look at Chip and Dale's rescue Rangers...that was a weird call back to Roger Rabbit and seems to not realize that it is the bad guy that it talks about. The future is weird.

Now I have the theme song from the cartoon stuck in my head.

I guess we'll see.

I don't have much faith in Lisa Joy after how crappy Westworld has gotten over time + her lackluster directorial / filmwriter debut last year. She might as well just butcher a Gibson work as well while she is at it.

EDIT: Okay, it looks like some guy named Scott B. Smith is showrunning, and Lisa Joy is just an Exec producer. So... small wonders? he got an Oscar nom for his script for "A Simple Plan" based on his book of same name. (I saw that film some years back.)

The director has done Cube and Splice. Kinda could go either way.

The Serpent Queen on Starz

So Samantha Morton plays Queen Catherine di Medici. She is perfectly cast, imo as the mother of three kings of France. Unlike some of the other series in this vein (White Queen, White Princess, Spanish Princess), this one has humor. Colm Meany was cast as Francis I and he is much the way I would imagine him from all I have read.

I suppose she is a bit less known and I'm not sure how much of the Renaissance or the wars of religion is going to play out in the show but so far it looks promising.

Eh. I dunno anymore. All of the franchise/adaptations are just kind of missing the mark nowadays ("House of the Dragon" might be the rare exception). Most times it's like a "All they could have done, but they chose to do implement the idea like this?" moment.

Here, the thing is that we already know the crux point of the character. He's done bad things in his fight against the empire and is looking to just do one good/right thing to justify somehow all the heartache and sacrifice, so he starts to change a bit in Rogue One and also ends up doing something good even while the piper is paid.

So what is all this? Just all the awful things he ends up doing to get to the film? Or why?

I don't really have a lot of faith in Disney as a company to pull that kind of thing off. AMC has pulled it off sometimes. But most of the big companies are not succeeding well. Disney has been pretty lousy in the last few years with all of the crap they bought and don't know what to do with.

I mean, it would be nice for it to succeed, but I'm not optimistic if Loki and Obi-Wan were the high points.

Is there a significance to the blue vs the green? Sorry, I'm not up to date on some of these memes I guess. But yes, white Jesus seems far more egregious considering I had to listen to evangelicals bitch about black Jesus appearing in iconography in Africa. ("Nooooo you can't recolor jesus to fit your culture! We colored him to ours first!")

I think they are supposed to represent the quadrant supporting those opinions/actions.

Blue for the authoritarian right i.e. Christian conservatives not questioning why Jesus is depicted as Caucasian White while he was actually from Middle East and would look like Jews/Arabs.

Lime green for libertarian left cause it's libleft pushing for these kind of race/gender swaps regardless of context/lore.

Here's something to bake one's noodle:

Disney is simply adapting their own freaking movie (since the fable has been told with different variations over time), so they can do what they like with it.

I wonder what the uproar would have been like if their cartoon Ariel had been black, and then they cast her as white for this film.

Probably black people would claim to have been erased, sure.... but I'm pretty sure most of the "purists" complaining about the change in our current timeline would suddenly not care. So it's not really about the purism.

I hope we all get past this someday.
