A historical and modern informational thread if anyone were curious about how people might have been able to still feed themselves during times of great economic strain and financial hardship.

I'm moving to eating lots of Ramen, although that's more because I'm lazy.

If you can't cook, you're fucked in any economy. Learning to cook is a more important skill.

I know how to cook. I've made irish stew and pork shoulder, and shrimp boil. I'm really lazy and I don't really feel like putting in that effort anymore.

The issue is with the price of food.

Do you want to do this kind of thing now?
I think its unironically a more important skill. If an economy does collapse, you need to be resourceful. It also saves you a lot of money. And the more things you can turn into food, the better. This isn't a new thing for me. I have always been avid about health and nutrition.

So what's your point? What's wrong with teaching people who don't know how to do this?

What are you on? Are the videos above not about "Struggle meals"? Who do you think came up with them? People who know how to cook, farm, and can their own food.

Yeah, and. What is your problem? Why shouldn't that knowledge be shared? I don't understand the point of contention here.

Bro, you replied to me. What was your initial problem with what I said?

If you know how to cook on a basic level, you can make decent meals even with inexpensive ingredients, or whatever happens to be available at the time and place. Food overall may be expensive, but there are ways to economize.

I used to just eat rice for dinner every day, just because it was easy enough to prepare and I didn't even have a microwave.

I didn't have a dishwasher, either. I have one now and it's so much better.

It seemed like you were taking issue with something.
Come on now, you've known me for a few years. You know that I may sound like there is something between the lines, but there never usually is.

I tend to assume everyone means something between the lines.

Add some canned beans, tomatoes, and whatever green veggie is on hand, and you have a good, balanced meal. Add some herbs and spices, and it even tastes good.

That Vintage Lifestyle channel isn't really anything but nostalgic stuff - no real info in there. The 1870 Homestead are great people - they live fairly close to me (I also use Todd's homemade bulk sausage recipe). Epic Gardening is good too (west coast growing, fyi). Southern Wife Everyday Life is also great for basic stuff and homemade staples.

Here are a few other ones I subscribe to and follow regularly, they may be helpful for for people who have never gardened or canned or preserved their own food or shopped sales to save money or cooked much for that matter. MIGardner has a store and you can order seeds. His prices are the best I've found and he has raised bed gardens, it's not an enormous farm (but I do think they just bought one).

You're welcome!

Also if anyone has a Sam's Club near them, they have a one year membership for $25. Non-perishables and paper products are usually much better priced - even if you have an apartment or somewhere small you can benefit from bulk purchases.
