I have several military friends. Indeed, putting the burden on the front line soldiers, who rely on the chain of command to keep them safe, to decide when something is lawful is too big a burden.

Mark Kelly getting stripped of his rank and pension for reminding them that they don't have to follow illegal orders also seems like too much.

To finally answer this one.
This will be controversial but in my opinion this is realism.

In a typical city in the developed world you have to live by law or otherwise you will get in trouble. Rules are fairly straight forward and that is how people tend to live. We can say that this is the law of the land. However once you move out a little bit from such areas things are quickly getting much more complicated. For that I don't need to watch further than my own life. If international law and UN resolutions were fully respected my country wouldn't even exist at this point (or at least not as a independent nation). When I was growing up in a war zone that also violated international law nothing happened. The international law was basically a sum of good wishes and nothing more than that. In other words what got me out of that situation was victory made by guns, tanks and airstrikes. As a matter of fact if that solution was given a green light sooner less people would have died. What is exactly the same thing we have today in Ukraine, years of various talks but the only thing that matters is the physical force. What international law says about the whole thing is basically completely irrelevant (and that was the case from day one).

So why I am actually saying all of that. Because understanding how this global dynamic works is vital if you plan to survive global realities as they are now. In other words if China and Russia can freely coup Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Myanmar, Madagascar ... etc. that changes everything. Because those that don't coup anyone are losing control over vital resources and then their economy is in serious problem (what makes it harder to coup). Herring will hate me for this but perhaps the best example of this is Germany. They are firmly for international law and thus their economy is in evident disarray, since they are losing control over the supply chains. Why are there troops and supplies from China and Russia in Venezuela ? Because they also want the oil and they have created puppet regime to make things easier for them. It isn't that US is bashing some truly independent country with working institutions.

In other words if we look upon on the world as one big electoral college game between US and China then the coups and similar games are basically gerrymander. It shouldn't be happening but if the other side is doing it and you don't you are basically just naive person (and you will probably lose because of that).
