Star Trek: Discovery (Eps 10 and 11)

ST: Discovery is becoming super creepy. The situation in the show right now resembles that of an old Star Trek: TOS episode. But I can't say that I am really enjoying this. The TOS episode that it is based on was far more entertaining. I don't find the new characters to be at all likable. I miss Bones, Kirk, and Spock. The captain is clearly an ESTJ. He lacks the ideals of Kirk, but has a stiff-necked git'r'dun attitude that I enjoy experiencing from a typological perspective. I feel like most of the characters are variations on the etype 6, both phobic and counter-phobic. Some of it seems more like a horror movie than sci-fi. Main characters are killed off instantly without even the benefit of a slow march to the execution chamber or attempt at a rescue. Every character is basically wearing a red shirt now.

I discussed it elsewhere, but they essentially abandoned building up connections with the characters to focus on plot. This was a mistake, because then they make decisions based on whether something moves/jars the plot versus whether it generates feelings in the viewers. I did like a few characters but felt like I barely knew them. Lorca was my favorite, honestly... or at least seemed the most real.. and that's mostly because of Jason Isaacs, not because of the writers. The admiral was kind of interesting too, but you barely find out much about her and in the last 2-3 episodes she just again becomes a mover of the plot in convenient ways versus acting according to character.

Great concept shot to hell by crappy writing.

I quit watching Discovery half way through episode 10. It's not like TOS at all or any of the other series. It's lost the fundamental nature of Star Trek that made it so appealing to me. They opted for grit and moral ambivalence.

Perhaps as stated by Tokenkindly, it was an attempt to be able to focus on the societal trauma of the moment in a very short range way, verses some of the long standing social issues in the background of TOS. If something happens in the world (bad) and is presented by the media, it would have made an easier approach to swinging the whole story line to an immediate parody to capitalize of the emotions of the moment. Mimic the crisis De-jour. A sad loss for the original concepts and steadfast hand of Gene Roddenberry. Frankly, I took one look at the revised Klingons and rolled my eyes at what was in store. I've downloaded some episodes and I will go back and look at them, but not as Star Trek.

As a chuckle I add, don't be surprised that when the ratings begin to fall, it turns into Tits and Ass in space again.
