A Bit of a Lifestyle Socialist

While you may be left-leaning and agree that social inequalities extend beyond the questions of economic redistribution and class, you do not take a definite stand on what the lifestyle socialists proclaim to be other oppressive systems of power. To you, it is possible that they are on to something – perhaps we really ought to reconsider our attitudes toward the marginalized minorities, our understanding of gender, and the way we exploit the resources of the planet. On the other hand, you are not entirely convinced that the lifestyle socialists have really figured out how to solve the problems that they so tirelessly call attention to. And it is perhaps hard to escape the suspicion that some of them may have disingenuous motives. Most likely, you are not a fan of the lifestyle socialists’ tactic of using witch hunts and social ostracism to quell opposition to their agenda. You prefer a public debate in which all voices can be heard – even those that you might disagree with.

I am a self-righteous left-liberal (selbstgerechter Linksliberal): 88.33%.
  1. Progressivism: 89%
  2. Cosmopolitanism: 90%
  3. Environmentalism: 86%

Self-Righteous Liberal:

You agree that racism, patriarchy, and nationalism combine to form powerful systemic forces of oppression. You see how these structures are woven into everyday language, culture, and tradition, and you would be willing to do your part to dismantle this web of oppression. Most likely, this includes speaking up against those who try to maintain the status quo. In your view, it is high time that we take a strong stance against the ingrained bigotry that has ruled the world for too long and reduced the planet to a reservoir of resources that we exploit at our beck and call. Having grasped the far-reaching consequences of systemic oppression, it is easy to regard those who do not see things this way as less aware and in need of education. Then, of course, there are also those who seem to disparage or outright deny these problems out of maliciousness or because they benefit from the current systems of privileges and oppression. When faced with such people, it is tempting for you to fight fire with fire. It is most likely reasonable to you that those who are intolerant should face backlash and social repercussions from their actions and speech.

Anyway, I did like the test (the test, not the book) and I would be the last person in the world to question IDRLABS's motive for choosing this particular book to make a political belief test.

Self-righteous comments:

Self-righteous liberalism is really nothing new. It's basically what's called "limousine liberal" or "champagne socialist" in the English-speaking world. BUT, this iteration comes from German politician Sahra Wagenknecht's book, Die Selbstgerechten: Mein Kampf (it's really Gegenprogramm, but "Kampf" doesn't sound that inaccurate, does it?) für Gemeinsinn und Zusammenhalt.

To THEIR credit, IDRLABS softened the description of left-liberalism (another term by Wagenknecht) quite a bit. I actually don't disagree with most of what my result says. But I also read parts of Die Selbstgerechte and OMG.

Wagengnecht wants a "Gemeinschaft" where people that are "überwiegend sesshaft und heimatverbunden". A "Gemeinschaft" is founded on the distinction between the "dazugehörigen" and those "für die das nicht gilt". She advocates a "Nationalstaat mit Wir-gefühl" and „Glaube, Nation und Heimat“

"Identitäten beruhen auf gemeinsamen Erzählungen, die Werte, Normen und Verhaltungsregeln festlegen. Viele Bräuche und Traditionen haben gerade darin ihren Wert, Gemeinsamkeit und Zugehörigkeit zu vermitteln und so gegenseitige Loyalitätsgefühle zu schaffen"
Have you ever thought of becoming a Linksliberal or a Das Zusätzliches Selbstgerechter Linksliberal? I hear they have better parties.

The thing is I can't really vote in German elections (too lazy to apply for dual citizenship and I don't even know if I even can). But, Wagenknecht's kind of nationalistic left is ubiquitous in my country (Mexico), so it strikes a chord.

The only people here that support cosmopolitanism are the businessmen, and that's because they love free trade. But they hate environmental regulations and oil is big business in Mexico. Poorer classes hate both free trade and environmental regulations. And everyone here is either very socially conservative or outright Catholic/Evangelical. I would be a party of one, I'm afraid.

Very cool. I'm not only a nationalist, but I'm also a globalist-- but I think all good things come from basic leftist national patriotism.

The thing is that "leftist national patriotism" and "globalism" are incoherent together. At the end of the day mirgation patters, foreign investment patterns, trade and labor patters depend on international cost differences. One way those differences balance out is with trade: but trade means that differences in wages for different kinds of labor and returns to capital invested in different economic activities. Another way is for capital and labor move directly: migration and "outsourcing". If you use trade barriers, capital and people are going to begin leaving the country; if you ban capital and labor movement, then the country is still subject to differences in cost across the regions of the world.
